H. 5101
A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF JOHN DOUGLAS PETREY OF WEST COLUMBIA AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of John Douglas Petrey of West Columbia on June 13, 2010; and
Whereas, born in Columbia, John Douglas Petrey was a son of the late Eugene Petrey and Samantha Cupstid Petrey of Swansea; and
Whereas, the young John, a graduate of Swansea High School, played football, basketball, and baseball for his alma mater while studying there. He was selected to several All-State teams, and he was tapped to play in the Shrine Bowl his senior year. He went on to play college baseball at USC-Aiken; and
Whereas, most recently a school administrator at Granby Alternative School in Cayce, John Petrey was a longtime teacher, administrator, and coach of high school athletics and Little League sports. Passionate about coaching and teaching children, he helped lead three teams to state football championships while at Swansea High School. He also coached Dixie Youth Baseball, helping to lead a team to the Dixie Youth World Series; and
Whereas, even though he had a successful teaching and coaching career, the positive impact he had on the lives of those he came in contact with went well beyond his students, sons , and players, whom he taught to put God first always and to play with class, courage, and the will to win; and
Whereas, above all, John was a committed husband and father who loved his wife and two sons devotedly. His family and his faith were the most important parts of his life; and
Whereas, he leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Gay Petrey; sons Tanner Petrey and Grant Petrey; and a host of other family members and friends. He will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of John Douglas Petrey of West Columbia and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mrs. Gay Petrey for the family.
