H. 5459

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF HARVEY LEE MURRAY, SR., OF MCCORMICK AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Harvey Lee Murray, Sr., of McCormick on May 4, 2020, at the venerable age of ninety-three; and

Whereas, born in Lincolnton, Georgia, Deacon Emeritus Harvey Lee Murray, Sr., was the eldest child of Curry Murray, Sr., and Mattie Arlene Callaham Murray DuBose; and

Whereas, in time, Harvey Lee answered the call of his country and entered military service with the United States Army. Upon returning from his tour of duty, Harvey Lee made McCormick his home. As a man of faith, he was a member of Holy Spring Baptist Church for more than seventy years, serving many of those years as chairman of the deacon ministry. He was an active member of the Savannah Valley Goodwill Association, BME Congress, and Union #1. In addition, he was an active member of Bethany Lodge 414 and the SonsNext of Aide; and

Whereas, having worked for others for years, Harvey Lee had the ambition and drive to open his own business. For many years, he owned and operated Murray's Amoco Service Station and later Murray's Garage, Inc. He served as a mentor and provided opportunities to numerous young men in the area; and

Whereas, this community activist and leader always wanted more for the citizens of McCormick County. He was elected to the McCormick County School Board, becoming its first black member, and was later appointed chairman, in which position he long served. Harvey Lee was a member of the McCormick County Housing Authority and also an active member of the South Carolina Democratic Party, where he encouraged many to exercise their right to vote; and

Whereas, Deacon Murray was preceded in death by his wife of twenty-nine years, Mary Adams Murray, and his wife of forty-three years, Ruth Eberhardt Murray, as well as by four PrevioussonsNext, Harvey Murray, Jr., Curry Murray, Gregory Crosby, and the Reverend Keith New; and

Whereas, he leaves to cherish his memory daughters Dr. Linda (Billy) Tucker of McCormick and Theresa Childs of Greenwood; Previoussons Ricky (Stephanie) Crosby of Aldie, Virginia, and Jerome Perrin of McCormick; daughters-in-law the Reverend Carolyn Murray of Calhoun Falls and Janice Crosby of Columbia; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends. He will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Harvey Lee Murray, Sr., of McCormick and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Linda Tucker for the family.
