OF ONE OF THIS STATE'S MOST PROMINENT AND RESPECTED LEADERS, MAJOR GENERAL
ROBERT BAILEY SOLOMON, U.S. ARMY RETIRED, AND FORMER COMMANDER OF FORT
JACKSON.

A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS
OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH
CAROLINA TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF ONE
OF THIS STATE'S MOST PROMINENT AND RESPECTED
LEADERS, MAJOR GENERAL ROBERT BAILEY SOLOMON,
U.S. ARMY RETIRED, AND FORMER COMMANDER OF FORT
JACKSON.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are deeply stunned
and saddened to learn of the death of Major General Robert Bailey
Solomon, on Sunday, March 29, 1998, at the young age of
sixty-seven; and
Whereas, Robert B. Solomon was born December 14, 1930, in
Baltimore, Maryland, and was the son of Sylvia Rochkind Solomon
and the late Abraham Solomon; and
Whereas, General Solomon initially began his outstanding military
career by serving in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1947-1950
before enlisting in the Army in 1951. Upon his graduation from OCS
at Fort Knox on November 22, 1952, he was commissioned a Second
Lieutenant of Armor; and
Whereas, General Solomon graduated from the University of
Maryland with a Bachelor of Science Degree; earned his Master of
Science Degree in Adult Education from John Hopkins University,
and an Associates Degree in Pre-Law from the University of
Baltimore. He was the distinguished Army graduate of the 1975
class at the National War College; and
Whereas, General Solomon's early service involved assignments with
Artillery Armor, Engineer, and Armored Infantry units. He
commanded a Tank Company in Germany, an Aerial Surveillance
Detachment at Fort Knox, a Basic Training Battalion at Fort Bragg,
and a Tank Battalion again in Germany. He is a former member of
the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment; 1st and 2nd Battalion of the
33rd Armor; 1st Battalion of the 35th Armor; and 4th Battalion of the
37th Armor. He has instructed at the Armor School and Army
Information School; and
Whereas, General Solomon was a veteran of both Korea and
Vietnam. During his thirty-six years in the military, he was awarded
the Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint
Service Commendation Medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Superior
Service Award, and two awards of the Army Distinguished Service
Medal. Upon his retirement, he received the coveted Order of Aaron
and Hur for his contributions supporting the spiritual dimension of
military life; and
Whereas, the General served his last ten years as Chief of Public
Affairs of the Army, Deputy of the Pacific Command, Deputy
Inspector General of the Army, and Commander of Fort Jackson; and
Whereas, following his illustrious career in the military, General
Solomon served as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at
Benedict College; was associated with the United Way of the
Midlands and with the Columbia Philharmonic Orchestra; and
Whereas, General Solomon served his community as a member of
the Board of Commissioners of the Columbia Housing Authority;
Past President of the Columbia Rotary; Chairman of Midlands
Marine Institute; Vice President of the Association of United States
Army; Chairman of Development at Richland Memorial CCTR; and
a member of the South Carolina Regional Opera Company; and
Whereas, a voice student at Peabody Conservatory, General Solomon
was tenor soloist in his synagogue's choir for many years. He
chanted High Holiday Services at the Beth Shalom Synagogue in
Columbia for the past ten years. He was an avid skier, but his
favorite pastime was videotaping his grandchildren's activities.
General Solomon was active in raising funds for the chapel at West
Point; and
Whereas, he is survived by his wife, Frances Nathanson Solomon of
Columbia; son, Eric Solomon of Annandale, Virginia; daughters,
Sharon Jacobs and Leah Cherney, both of Columbia; his mother of
Baltimore; brothers, Charles M. Solomon and Dr. Lawrence
Solomon, both of Baltimore; sister, Cynthia Solomon Portnoy of
Northridge, California; and ten grandchildren; and
Whereas, the General will long be admired by the many people
whose lives were touched by his tender, caring manner of life for all;
and
Whereas, General Solomon's death represents a tremendous loss to
Richland County, and in truth, the State of South Carolina, and we
want the members of his family and many friends to know that they
are in our uppermost thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina, by this resolution, express their deepest sympathy to the
family and many friends of one of this State's most prominent and
respected leaders, Major General Robert Bailey Solomon, U.S. Army
Retired, and former Commander of Fort Jackson.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the family of Major General Robert Bailey Solomon.
