S. 1331

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF JAMES ROLAND RHODES, JR., OF RIDGELAND AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of James Roland Rhodes, Jr., of Ridgeland on March 24, 2010; and

Whereas, born in Garnett on May 18, 1939, he was the sonNext of James Roland Rhodes, Sr., and Edith Phillips Rhodes; and

Whereas, after graduating from Ridgeland High School in 1957, Mr. Rhodes lived briefly in Columbia and worked with the South Carolina Tax Commission, as well as State Farm Insurance. After graduating from the Louisiana School of Banking, he returned to Ridgeland in 1970 and became manager and vice-president of First National Bank. He continued in this position when South Carolina Bank and Trust acquired First National Bank, retiring as senior vice-president in 2004; and

Whereas, believing a man should be actively involved in his community, Mr. Rhodes was a lifelong member of Ridgeland Baptist Church and a member of the Anglers Sunday School Class. In earlier years, he coached many youth in Little League and Dixie League baseball. An avid golfer, he was also a faithful University of South Carolina Gamecock fan for forty-five years; and

Whereas, his deep love for his community was further evidenced through his work on the Jasper County Development Board and the State Development Board. He was a member of Jasper County Rotary Club, past president of the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Ridgeland Business Association, and a member of the South Carolina Bankers Association and Masonic Lodge #98 in Ridgeland; and

Whereas, in 1992, he was presented the Sergeant Jasper Award by the Chamber of Commerce, which honors members of the community for outstanding service toward the enrichment of life in Jasper County; and

Whereas, to cherish his memory he leaves his beloved wife of forty-four years, Melinda McTeer Rhodes; Previousson James Roland Rhodes III; daughter Melinda McTeer Rhodes; two grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends. He will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of James Roland Rhodes, Jr., of Ridgeland and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Melinda McTeer Rhodes for the family.
