A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MEMORIALIZING THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF
AMERICAN TO RENAME THE WASHINGTON NATIONAL AIRPORT IN VIRGINIA AFTER FORMER
PRESIDENT RONALD WILSON REAGAN ON THE OCCASION OF HIS EIGHTY-SEVENTH BIRTHDAY
 ON FEBRUARY 6, 1998.

02/04/98 Senate Referred to Committee on Judiciary SJ-12

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

MEMORIALIZING THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO RENAME THE WASHINGTON NATIONAL AIRPORT IN VIRGINIA AFTER FORMER PRESIDENT RONALD WILSON REAGAN ON THE OCCASION OF HIS EIGHTY-SEVENTH BIRTHDAY ON FEBRUARY 6, 1998.

Whereas, Ronald Wilson Reagan was elected in 1980 as the fortieth President of the United States and was reelected with a forty-nine state landslide victory in 1984; and

Whereas, Ronald Reagan was the first president since Dwight D. Eisenhower to have successfully completed two full terms in office; and

Whereas, President Reagan successfully enacted policies which cut taxes, eliminated unnecessary regulations, and scaled down the size of the government, that led to the longest period of sustained economic growth in United States history. Many economists claim that the Reagan economic policies of the eighties are responsible for the outstanding economy of the nineties; and

Whereas, the "Reagan Revolution" forever changed the political climate of the United States and contributed to the dismantling of the welfare state and the budget agreements of the eighties and nineties where government spending and tax rates were cut; and

Whereas, President Reagan inherited a demoralized and weakened military, and immediately set out to improve the morale of our troops and to modernize weapons systems; and

Whereas, President Reagan's successful foreign and defense policies led to improved United States credibility and respect worldwide, which ultimately led to the demise of the Soviet Empire, the end of the "Cold War", and the removal of communism from Central America; and

Whereas, President Reagan emerged as a much beloved leader who restored integrity and respect to the institution of the presidency and who took the United States from a bleak period of high unemployment, double digit inflation, and interest rates, and by enacting programs that changed the course of history, President Reagan truly made it "Morning in America". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina hereby memorialize the Congress of the United States of America to rename the Washington National Airport in honor of President Ronald Wilson Reagan as a way to celebrate President Reagan's eighty-seventh birthday on February 6, 1998.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the United States Senate, the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation.
