 A HOUSE RESOLUTION TO COMMEND MAC ARTHUR GOODWIN OF COLUMBIA FOR HIS
 CONTRIBUTIONS TO ART AND ART EDUCATION OVER MANY YEARS AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM
 ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RECENT ELECTION AS PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL ART
 EDUCATION ASSOCIATION.

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MAC ARTHUR GOODWIN OF COLUMBIA FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO ART AND ART EDUCATION OVER MANY YEARS AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RECENT ELECTION AS PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL ART EDUCATION ASSOCIATION.

Whereas, on March 11, 1999, at Reston, Virginia, National Art Education Association Executive Director Thomas A. Hatfield announced the election of Mac Arthur Goodwin of Columbia as President of the National Art Education Association; and

Whereas, Mac Arthur Goodwin received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Claflin College and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from the University of South Carolina. He has held arts education and policy appointments on the National Standards Committee, National Assessment of Educational Progress, the College Board, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the Educational Testing Service, the Council of Chief State School Officers, and the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin started his professional career as an elementary and secondary art teacher in Spartanburg and is now an education associate with the South Carolina Department of Education. He is a trustee of the National Art Education Foundation and a member of the National Art Education Association Research Commission. He is a former President of the South Carolina Art Education Association and was named an NAEA Distinguished Fellow in 1992. In 1991, he received the National Art Educator of the Year award and the South Carolina Governor's Award for Arts Education in 1990; and

Whereas, an accomplished and published author on subjects relating to art, recent recognition of Mr. Goodwin includes: the 1998 South Carolina Art Education Association Distinguished Service Award; the 1999 South Carolina Art Education Association's Life Time Achievement Award; the 1996 Class of the National Art Education Association Fellows; the 1991 NAEA National Art Educator of the Year; and the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award for Art Education; and a special commendation from the South Carolina General Assembly for meritorious service in arts education. Additional special recognitions include the 1990 National Art Education Association, National Supervision and Administration Award, the 1989 NAEA Southeastern Supervision and Administration Award, and the 1986 South Carolina Outstanding Art Educator of the Year Award; and

Whereas, as a producing artist, Mr. Goodwin maintains an exhibition schedule throughout the southeast and exhibits with Southern Exposure, a South Carolina based group of artists that maintains an exhibition schedule throughout the southeast. Mr. Goodwin has received purchases awards in the Atlanta Ninth Annual National Art Exhibition and Competition and has had work included in the Springs Mills Tri-State Travel Art Exhibit. As an artist and educator, Mr. Goodwin spends much of his energy promoting the importance of arts education in the school curriculum at local and national levels. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Mac Arthur Goodwin of Columbia for his contributions to art and art education over many years and congratulate him on the occasion of his recent election as president of the National Art Education Association.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mac Arthur Goodwin of Columbia.
