A SENATE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING THE YMCA OF COLUMBIA ON THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE YMCA MOVEMENT AND ACKNOWLEDGING THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF THE ORGANIZATION ON THIS COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the year 2001 marks the 150th anniversary of the YMCA movement in the United States; and

Whereas, the YMCA has touched the lives of virtually all Americans, from pioneering camping, public libraries, night schools, group swimming lessons and lifesaving, and teaching English as a second language, to inventing basketball and volleyball; and

Whereas, the YMCA is dedicated to building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities; and

Whereas, the YMCA serves people of all ages, incomes, and abilities through a wide variety of programs and services designed to meet changing needs; and

Whereas, the YMCA of Columbia lives its mission every day, "To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all"; and

Whereas, the YMCA movement in the United States serves nearly eighteen million members per year as an organization that is volunteer-founded, volunteer-based, and volunteer-led; and

Whereas, the YMCA programs provide a spirit of adventure that challenges members to learn new skills, try new activities, and explore other cultures while being good citizens in their community; and

Whereas, the YMCA of Columbia provides parents with high quality, affordable child care; provides teens with a safe place to go after school; provides families a fun, affordable place to spend time together; provides seniors with social programs; and provides healthy programs and services for everyone in the community; and

Whereas, the YMCA of Columbia is part of a national movement that serves nine million children per year, that is the nation's largest child care provider, that currently serves one in ten teens, and that incorporates the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility into all of its programs; and

Whereas, the YMCA movement has a long history of partnership with other community organizations, such as schools, hospitals, and police departments; and

Whereas, the 150th anniversary of the YMCA movement will draw special public attention to the distinguished history of the organization and to benefits that the people of South Carolina have enjoyed as a result of the proud tradition of this organization. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate of South Carolina takes great pleasure in recognizing the YMCA of Columbia on the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the YMCA movement and in acknowledging with great pride the positive impact of the organization on this community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. J. P. Rogers of the YMCA of Columbia.
