 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ON THE FAMILY COURT BENCH FOR THE THIRD JUDICIAL CIRCUIT
 UPON HIS RETIREMENT ON JULY 5, 2002, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM IN HIS
 FUTURE PURSUITS.

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE HONORABLE RUBEN L. GRAY OF SUMTER FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ON THE FAMILY COURT BENCH FOR THE THIRD JUDICIAL CIRCUIT UPON HIS RETIREMENT ON JULY 5, 2002, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM IN HIS FUTURE PURSUITS.

Whereas, the Honorable Ruben L. Gray of Sumter County concludes ten years of distinguished service on the Third Judicial Circuit Family Court Bench in July; and

Whereas, his retirement leaves a legacy of contributions to both the law and the Sumter community; and

Whereas, the Georgetown native received the B.S. in Business and the L.L.B. in law from South Carolina State College and its law school; and

Whereas, he practiced law with the Honorable Ernest A. Finney, Jr., in Sumter from 1963 until his judicial election in 1992, interrupted by a two-year stint in the United States Army, three years with Governor Robert E. McNair, and three years as Vice-President for Development at Morris College; and

Whereas, his countless contributions to the Sumter community include service on the boards of United Way, Sumter School District 17, Sumter County Development, South Carolina Crime Victims, Salvation Army, and Sumter Regional Directors of the First Savings Bank; and

Whereas, Judge Gray has also actively participated in the Sumter Chamber of Commerce, the Sumter TEC Foundation, and the Rotary Club, and was Chairman of the Sumter County Council; and

Whereas, this leader in the area of jurisprudence served as Vice-Chairman of the South Carolina Conference of Family Court Judges and on the Advisory Board of the Guardian ad Litem Program; and

Whereas, his public service has been recognized by his awards for Community Leader of America, Who's Who Among Black Americans, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Distinguished Service, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Citizen of the Year, and Martin Luther King Superior Public Service; and

Whereas, both the bench and the community will surely miss his constant presence and contributions; his loving wife, Jean, and their three adult children look forward to spending more time with him in his retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the South Carolina House of Representatives hereby commends the Honorable Ruben L. Gray of Sumter for his distinguished service on the Family Court Bench for the Third Judicial Circuit upon his retirement on July 5, 2002, and extends best wishes to him in his future pursuits.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Ruben L. Gray.
