A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR JUDGE MARION D. MYERS OF SUMTER COUNTY UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS FAMILY COURT JUDGE FOR THE THIRD CIRCUIT ON JUNE 30, 2004, AFTER TWENTY YEARS OF CONTINUOUS SERVICE AND TO EXTEND TO HIM BEST WISHES IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the service and honorable achievements of outstanding jurists like Judge Marion D. Myers of Sumter County who protect the interests of the citizens of the Palmetto State every day; and

Whereas, Judge Myers has served the community of Sumter for twenty consecutive years as Family Court Judge for the Third Judicial Circuit and his service and commitment to the citizens of Sumter is unparalleled; and

Whereas, born in Sumter on January 17, 1939, Judge Myers is the son of the late Marion and Nell Dunbar Myers; and

Whereas, after spending his youth in Sumter and attending the public schools there, in 1956, Judge Myers left Sumter to attend Wofford College in Spartanburg where he excelled as a member of Blue Key, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and Kappa Alpha Order and President of the Senior Class; and

Whereas, after receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wofford College in 1960, Judge Myers attended to the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1963; and

Whereas, upon completion of law school, Judge Myers returned to Sumter to begin the practice of law with one of the oldest law firms in the State, which became known as Lee, Moise & Myers when he became a partner; and

Whereas, involving himself in many civic organizations during private practice, Judge Myers served as a member of the Sumter County Planning Commission, as director of the Sumter Chamber of Commerce, as director of the Sumter Family YMCA, and as a member of the Sumter County Commission on Higher Education; and

Whereas, a member of the Board of Directors of the Easter Seal Society and the Board of Directors of the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation, Judge Myers has also served as Master in Equity for Sumter County; and

Whereas, Judge Myers was elected by the South Carolina General Assembly to the position of Family Court Judge for the Third Judicial Circuit in February 1984, and he has served continuously in that position with distinction; and

Whereas, during his tenure on the Family Court Bench, Judge Myers has served as Secretary-Treasurer, Vice-President, and President of the South Carolina Conference of Family Court Judges, as a Hearing Master for the Board of Commissioners on Judicial Standards, and as a member of the Judicial Council of the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, in addition to his work on the bench, Judge Myers also gave of his time, energy, and talents as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee to Study Judicial Compensation, a member of the Joint Commission on Alternative Dispute Resolution, and served as Chief Administrative Judge for the Third Judicial Circuit; and

Whereas, Judge Myers is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association and the Sumter County Bar Association and is admitted to practice in all South Carolina Courts, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals; and

Whereas, the devoted husband of the former Adele M. Marks of Washington, D.C., Judge Myers has three children, Marion Parker Myers, Leigh Dunbar Eddy, and Louise (Ceasie) Boylston and five stepchildren, Lisa, Stephanie, Samuel, Alexandria, and Megan, and he is the proud grandfather to six grandchildren; and

Whereas, throughout the past twenty years, Judge Marion D. Myers has served the residents of Sumter County to the best of his ability, and his presence as Family Court Judge for the Third Judicial Circuit will be sorely missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Judge Marion D. Myers of Sumter County upon his retirement as Family Court Judge for the Third Judicial Circuit on June 30, 2004, after twenty years of continuous service and extend to him best wishes in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Judge Marion D. Myers of Sumter, South Carolina.
