Whereas, birthdays are joyous occasions to be shared with one's family and friends, and the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are honored to recognize this very special day on which Betty Rhoad Lilly will celebrate eighty years of a full and wonderful life; and

Whereas, she began her higher education at the University of South Carolina where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree and her Master's Degree in Education, and at Duke University where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing; and

Whereas, starting out in the nursing profession, Mrs. Lilly wanted to spend more time with her family and entered the teaching profession where she was able to utilize her education, talent, and love of children; and

Whereas, balancing her job and the needs of her family came easily to Mrs. Lilly, she unselfishly gave of her time, talents, and energy to the children she taught, to her own children, and later grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mrs. Lilly is the beloved mother to four children: Candy Barrett, Ed Lilly, Doty Cheezem, and Claire Boxt and the devoted grandmother to nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild who bring great happiness to her life; and

Whereas, Mrs. Lilly dedicated her life to caring for her family and providing a home warmed by her good southern cooking, her gentle care, and her loving ways; and

Whereas, a woman of great faith, Mrs. Lilly is a long-time and active member of Shandon Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, Mrs. Lilly also finds time to serve her community and State by volunteering for many worthy projects, and her efforts were formally recognized when she was named Volunteer of the Year by Harvest Hope Food Bank and received the Jefferson Award for volunteer service; and

Whereas, the sacrifices she has made over the last eighty years and her sincere dedication to her family, community, State, and God serves as an inspiration and an example to all who are privileged to know and love her; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the South Carolina General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to recognize this milestone in the life of such a beloved daughter of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and express their congratulations to Betty Rhoad Lilly on the occasion of her eightieth birthday on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, and wish her continued good health and much happiness in the years to come.
