H. 5012

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION ON ITS DILIGENT EFFORTS TO THE CONSERVATION OF THE WILD TURKEY AND THE PRESERVATION OF OUR NATION'S HUNTING TRADITION, AND TO RECOGNIZE THE NUMEROUS PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT THE FEDERATION'S MISSION.

Whereas, it is with great pride and satisfaction that the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Rob Keck, be recognized for its mission to provide conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of the hunting tradition; and

Whereas, founded in 1973, the NWTF is a private, nonprofit conservation and education organization and is the only nonprofit organization in the nation that has become the voice for conservation and hunting in all the 50 United States and 16 other countries; and

Whereas, at the heart of the organization lies its biggest accomplishment, the restoration of the wild turkey from the brink of extinction. Today, wild turkeys number nearly seven million, an amazing accomplishment considering there were only 30,000 wild turkeys across North America in the early 1900's; and

Whereas, this organization, whose members come from all walks of life: doctors, lawyers, laborers, farmers, teachers, landowners, and urbanites, care about conservation and the wild turkey, as well as spending quality time with their families and friends in the great outdoors; and

Whereas, whether interested in turkey hunting, wildlife management, passing on American's hunting tradition, camping with the family, or providing outdoor opportunities for children, women, or people with disabilities, the NWTF has a program for everyone; and

Whereas, the JAKES/Xtreme JAKES (Juniors Acquiring, Knowledge, Ethics, and Sportsmanship) offers children and youth the opportunity to learn about conservation, outdoor recreation, and how hunters were the first conservationists; and

Whereas, knowing that women are the backbone of the family, the NWTF's Women in the Outdoors program strives to teach women about conservation and the outdoors by hosting events to learn about firearms, archery, camping, outdoor cooking, gardening for wildlife, and other activities that families can enjoy together; and

Whereas, everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, the Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF provides that opportunity by partnering able-bodied sportsmen and women with people with disabilities for hunting, fishing, boating, and target shooting adventures; and

Whereas, with seventy-five percent of our nation's land in private hands, landowners play an important role in wildlife conservation by participating in the NWTF's Hunting Heritage Landowner program, which works to teach landowners about wildlife management through expert instruction; and

Whereas, the financial impact the programs of the NWTF have on the State of South Carolina is immeasurable; and

Whereas, the NWTF's has partnered with Weyerhaeuser to provide a membership program, the Hunting Heritage Club, to provide land management and hunting tips through Get in the Game magazine and additional help through the NWTF's Conservation Seed and HELP (Habitat Enhancement Land Program) programs--to date there are 50,500 Hunting Heritage Club members; and

Whereas, the 500,000 volunteers along with corporate and wildlife agencies partnered with the NWTF to raise $24 million for the wild turkey; awarded over $1.6 million to college-bound students; hired biologists to help administer and improve the NWTF's national and regional habitat; provided frozen domestic turkeys to less fortunate families at Thanksgiving; since 1999, donated almost 20,000 Wild About Turkey Education boxes to schools to teach more than 2 million students about conservation and hunting programs; and has donated $1.2 million to the 4-H Shooting Sports program; and

Whereas, the NWTF is a great conservation organization that has woven the American fibers of faith, family, and flag into the work they do to support its mission; and

Whereas, it is with pride that the NWTF's headquarters finds it home in Edgefield, South Carolina; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly salute the NWTF for its hard work to conserve our natural resources, to share its passion for the outdoors and its dedication to ensure future generations will carry on its conservation and hunting legacy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly commend the National Wild Turkey Federation on its diligent efforts to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of our nation's hunting tradition, and recognize the numerous programs that support the federation's mission.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jere Peak, NWTF President.
