S. 748

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MARION'S HUGH V. COLEMAN, M.D., MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA RECOVERING PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH HAPPINESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina Senate honors those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves to the welfare of this great State's citizenry; and

Whereas, Columbia native Dr. Hugh V. Coleman, retiring Medical Director of the South Carolina Recovering Professional Program, stands among their number as an outstanding public benefactor, one much admired in his role as both medical doctor and administrator; and

Whereas, young Hugh was educated in the public schools of Columbia, spending many of his leisure hours in Boy Scout activities and earning the rank of Eagle Scout with Gold Palm. In further preparation for his life's work, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of South Carolina and his M.D. at the Medical College of South Carolina; and

Whereas, after serving as Chief of Surgery at a United States Army hospital in Arizona, Dr. Coleman established a general-surgery practice in Marion, from which he retired in 1997; and

Whereas, following his retirement from private practice, this compassionate medical man, always seeking ways to serve, became a prime mover in establishing the South Carolina Recovering Professional Program and took up the post of its medical director in 2000, in which capacity he has been a blessing to those with whom he has worked; and

Whereas, among his many other contributions to the State of South Carolina are service as an officer of the South Carolina Society of Addiction Medicine, Governor's appointee to the South Carolina Health Coordinating Council and Chairman of the Quality Assurance Committee, and Medicare Consultant for the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services; and

Whereas, for his accomplishments and contributions to this great State, in 2001 he was awarded South Carolina's highest honor, the Order of the Palmetto, presented by Governor James Hodges; and

Whereas, he and his wife, the former Joyce Lois Joyner, raised a fine family of four children, who have given their parents the joy of five grandchildren; and

Whereas, during Dr. Coleman's well-earned retirement, the Senate hopes he will find himself more frequently out in the yard, gardening and enjoying his bounty of beautiful flowers and photographing his grandchildren; and

Whereas, having made his mark and set the bar of achievement extraordinarily high in his profession, Dr. Coleman will be remembered with affection and gratitude by colleagues, patients, and legislative friends for years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Marion's Hugh V. Coleman, M.D., Medical Director of the South Carolina Recovering Professional Program, upon the occasion of his retirement, commend him for his many years of dedicated service as a medical professional, and wish him much happiness and fulfillment in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Hugh V. Coleman.
