H. 3336

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MRS. FLORENCE SMITH OF BERKELEY COUNTY ON THE HAPPY OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER ALL THE BEST IN HER CENTENNIAL YEAR.

Whereas, Mrs. Florence Bennett Smith was born on February 9, 1907, to her proud parents, Alfred and Grace Bennett, in rural Huger, South Carolina; and

Whereas, a lifetime Huger resident, she has made invaluable contributions to the lives of her family, neighbors, and friends; and

Whereas, despite growing up with modest means, Mrs. Smith has made the best of her many blessings, crediting God for all she has and all she is; and

Whereas, Mrs. Smith shared a loving marriage with her devoted husband, the late Mr. Arthur Smith. Together, they had five daughters, Lillian Smith Bland, Pearl Smith Snipes, Bessie Smith Horlback, Cora Lee Smith Smalls, and Grace Smith Watkins; and

Whereas, grateful for a large, healthy family, Mrs. Smith enjoys spending time with her twenty grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, the true matriarch of her family and community, Mrs. Smith is known as "Mama" to her five daughters and other family members and as "Queenie" by fellow members of her church, Charity African Methodist Episcopal Church; and

Whereas, a steadfast churchgoer at the age of 99, Mrs. Smith still sings the hymn "I Will Trust in the Lord Until I Die", and is forever mindful of her church and commitment to her faith; and

Whereas, Mrs. Smith has impacted countless lives both in her own community in South Carolina as a whole, and the House of Representatives takes great pride in honoring her as an outstanding daughter of South Carolina on her one hundredth birthday. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mrs. Florence Smith of Berkeley County on the happy occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her all the best in her centennial year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Florence Smith.
