H. 4047

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. RONALD R. INGLE, OF HORRY COUNTY, FOR HIS FOURTEEN YEARS OF EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE AND REMARKABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT OF COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, President Ronald R. Ingle, a life-long student and educator, has devoted his life to higher education in his many roles in and contributions to public education in South Carolina; and

Whereas, President Ingle began his road to the presidency of Coastal Carolina University with a strong academic and professional background, graduating with a Bachelor's degree from Wofford College, then going on to earn his Master's degree in higher education administration from Florida State University and a Doctorate in psychology from Ohio State University; and

Whereas, spending his entire career in administration and teaching in institutions of higher education, President Ingle held positions at Kennesaw College, South Georgia College, and Ohio State University before returning to his native state of South Carolina to serve in the University of South Carolina system in 1972; and

Whereas, after a distinguished sixteen-year career as a professor, administrator, and associate dean at the University of South Carolina, President Ingle came to Coastal Carolina University to become Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and, finally in 1993, the first president of the newly-instituted independent and public Coastal Carolina University; and

Whereas, President Ingle's fourteen-year presidential service, double the national average of college presidential service, is a compelling testament to a record of outstanding accomplishments; and

Whereas, under President Ingle's leadership, the university has become a premier undergraduate liberal arts institution that has created unequaled research opportunities and several programs that take advantage of the Waccamaw region's unique resources: marine science, professional golf course management, and resort tourism management are recognized as some of the finest in the country; and

Whereas, to further the University's own identity and better connect with the community, President Ingle carefully planned and began an NCAA Division I athletic program in 2003 that has received national accolades in its four-year history; the Chanticleer football team advanced to the NCAA Division I Football Championships and won a Big South Conference F. "Buddy" Sasser Cup Trophy for best overall athletic programs, marking the university's third straight Sasser Cup trophy and its eighth overall, the most in league history; and

Whereas, the academic and athletic opportunities and successes at President Ingle's direction have led to an increase in enrollment by eighty percent since 1993, an expansion of baccalaureate and graduate programs, including a Masters in business and coastal and marine wetland science, and a capital expansion amounting to a thirty percent increase in building space to accommodate the unprecedented growth; and

Whereas, President Ingle is the author of numerous academic works and, over the course of his academic career, was an executive member of various important organizations including the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Southern Regional Educational Board, and the Big South Athletic Conference; and

Whereas, outside of his contributions to the academic community, President Ingle honorably served as a captain in the United States Army from 1964 to 1966. He also has found time to be active in his community by serving on numerous boards of organizations like the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Pee Dee Heritage Center, and the United Way of Horry County, just to name a few; and

Whereas, President Ingle is the beloved husband of wife, Judy, of Florence, Alabama, and together they are the proud parents of two sons, David and Stephen, and three grandchildren; and

Whereas, ably leading Coastal Carolina University to countless notable successes, President Ingle will be sorely missed upon his retirement, but his legacy will live on in the institution that is skyrocketing to greatness due to his leadership. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Ronald R. Ingle, of Horry County, for his fourteen years of extraordinary service and remarkable accomplishments as President of Coastal Carolina University and to wish him all the best upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to President Ronald R. Ingle.
