H. 5256

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR CARIA WHITMIRE-CAMP FOR OVERCOMING THE STRUGGLES SHE HAS FACED IN HER SEVENTEEN YEARS, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER FOR BEING NAMED THE 2008 SOUTH CAROLINA TEEN OF THE YEAR BY THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were pleased to learned that Caria Whitmire-Camp has been named the Boys and Girls Clubs of America's 2008 South Carolina Teen of the Year; and

Whereas, when she was two years old, she moved to New York City with her mother and brother, and by the time she was six, she had an infant sister in her turbulent home; and

Whereas, after an observant nurse noticed scars on Caria's young body and pressed her to tell how she had received them, she and her siblings began a long, difficult journey through foster care; and

Whereas, in 1997, after a diligent social worker looked for and contacted Caria's existing family, her mother's sister first visited her in foster care; and

Whereas, in 1999, Caria moved to Lady's Island to live with her aunt and uncle, Veronica and Kenneth Camp, Sr., who had returned to the states after ten years overseas with the military; and

Whereas, after spending seven years in foster care in numerous foster homes, shelters, and group homes, she went to live with her own relatives, and her adoption was finalized in 2002; and

Whereas, her new parents realized the different nature of their relationship and adapted, but they still required Caria to go to school and make good grades, to do her chores, and to be obedient and respectful; and

Whereas, through her participation in the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, she has channeled her energies and found a purpose, and was named the center's Teen of the Year three years in a row; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased that Caria Whitmire-Camp has benefited from her own dynamic personality, her new family, a plethora of caring counselors, and membership in the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and has been recognized for her personal growth by being named Teen of the Year. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Caria Whitmire-Camp for overcoming the struggles she has faced in her seventeen years, and congratulate her for being named the 2008 South Carolina Teen of the Year by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Caria Whitmire-Camp.
