H. 5298

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR REVEREND JOHN RANDOLPH, JR., AND HIS WIFE, MRS. ETHEL MAE GILLIANS RANDOLPH, BOTH OF CHARLESTON COUNTY, FOR THEIR MANY OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR FAMILY, FAITH, AND COMMUNITY, AND TO WISH THEM ALL THE BEST UPON THEIR RETIREMENT FROM THE CHARLESTON DISTRICT OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH SOUTH CAROLINA CONFERENCE.

Whereas, it is with great pride that the South Carolina House of Representatives pauses to honor Reverend and Mrs. John Randolph, Jr., for their extraordinary thirty-four year career in the ministry; and

Whereas, Reverend Randolph graduated from Laing High School in Mount Pleasant in 1960 and furthered his education at Shaw University, where he majored in public administration and business management; and

Whereas, a graduate of Allen University, Mrs. Randolph completed further studies at the College of Charleston and the Citadel. She became a teacher and taught in Charleston County School District No. 1 for thirty-one years until her retirement; and

Whereas, responding willingly and wholeheartedly to his call to preach in 1971, Reverend Randolph attended Clarksville School of Theology and was licensed to preached in that same year; and

Whereas, during his exceptional career in the ministry, Reverend Randolph pastored five churches, including Mt. Nebo A.M.E. Church, Mt. Horr A.M.E. Church, St. Paul A.M.E. Church, St. James Bethel A.M.E. Church, and St. Peters A.M.E. Church; and

Whereas, in 1999, he was named Presiding Elder under the Right Reverend John Hurst Adams, Bishop of the Seventh Episcopal District, and steadfastly served in that position for the past nine years; and

Whereas, Reverend and Mrs. Randolph share a loving marriage and adore spending time with their two daughters, Master Sergeant Sharon R. Vanderhorst and Mrs. Brigette C. Geradeau, four delightful grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, an active community leader, Reverend Randolph is a member of East Cooper Lodge #470 P.H.A., George Washington Carver Consistory #162, Arabian Temple #139, and the NAACP. Mrs. Randolph is active in the Missionary Society of the A.M.E. Church and the Order of the Eastern Star #365; and

Whereas, Reverend Randolph's favorite scripture, "I have set the Lord always before me: Because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore, my Heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: My flesh also shall rest in hope", exemplifies the couple's life together and unwavering commitment to their faith and community; and

Whereas, on August 29, 2008, family, friends, and fellow believers will gather to honor Reverend and Mrs. Randolph and to send them best wishes for a well-deserved retirement together. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Reverend John Randolph, Jr., and his wife, Mrs. Ethel Mae Gillians Randolph, both of Charleston County, for their many outstanding contributions to their family, faith, and community, and wish them all the best upon their retirement from the Charleston District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church South Carolina Conference.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Reverend and Mrs. John Randolph, Jr.
