A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF MODJESKA M.
SIMKINS OF COLUMBIA, OUTSTANDING CIVIL RIGHTS
ACTIVIST AND HUMANITARIAN, AND EXTENDING
SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, Modjeska Monteith Simkins of Columbia died Sunday, April
5, 1992, at the age of ninety-two; and
Whereas, she was a legendary civil rights activist and a great
humanitarian; and
Whereas, she was one of the original organizers of the NAACP in South
Carolina and one of the architects of the Clarendon County case that
became part of the United States Supreme Court's 1954 case of
Brown vs. Board of Education -- the landmark decision which
struck down school segregation; and
Whereas, she was an outspoken critic of any group or institution which
denied basic civil and human rights to anyone, regardless of race,
religion, gender, or ethnic background; and
Whereas, she was seen by countless thousands as a champion for the
causes of the underprivileged and the voiceless; and
Whereas, her efforts, her energy, her dedication, and her zeal have
seldom been duplicated and probably never exceeded; and
Whereas, we want her family and friends to know that they are
uppermost in our thoughts and have our deepest sympathy. Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina, by this resolution, express sorrow at the death of Modjeska M.
Simkins of Columbia, outstanding civil rights activist and humanitarian,
and extend sympathy to her family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the
family of Modjeska M. Simkins.
