A SENATE RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE
TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE LATE DR. H. COOPER
BLACK, JR.
Whereas, the members of the Senate were saddened to note the passing of
Dr. H. Cooper Black, Jr., on October 24, 1993, during the legislative
interim; and
Whereas, Dr. Black who formerly served as chief of staff at Lexington
Medical Center began his career in medicine after graduating from
Wofford College when he enrolled in the Medical University of South
Carolina where he graduated in 1965 and completed a residency in general
surgery in 1970; and
Whereas, Dr. Black, after serving as a major in the United States Army
from 1971-73, began to practice surgery in Columbia, where he was for
twenty years a partner in Columbia Surgical Associates; and
Whereas, his dedication to his profession was evidenced by his
membership in the South Carolina Medical Association, Lexington County
Medical Association, American Medical Association, as a Fellow of the
American College of Surgeons, as an affiliate of the Royal Society of
Medicine, London, as diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, and as
assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University of South Carolina
Medical School; and
Whereas, Dr. Black also served as chief of surgery at Lexington Medical
Center from 1974-76, as chief of staff of Lexington Medical Center from
1982-84, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lowman Home;
and
Whereas, Dr. Black was a noted outdoorsman and was a member of the
Sandlapper Field Trial Club and chairman of the South Carolina Sporting
Dog Commission; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the Senate to pause in their
deliberations so that they might note the passing of so distinguished a son
of South Carolina and such an extraordinary exemplar of the high calling
that is the medical profession. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate express sympathy to the family and many
friends of the late Dr. H. Cooper Black, Jr.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his
wife, Mrs. Jackie DuBose Black.
