S*0747 Concurrent Resolution, By Drummond and I.E. Lourie
A Concurrent Resolution commending Coach Red Myers of Greenwood for a career
of highly successful involvement in athletics and coaching and wishing him
happiness in his retirement.
03/12/91 Senate Introduced, adopted, sent to House SJ-5
03/13/91 House Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence
A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
COMMENDING COACH RED MYERS OF GREENWOOD FOR A
CAREER OF HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL INVOLVEMENT IN
ATHLETICS AND COACHING AND WISHING HIM HAPPINESS
IN HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, after four decades in athletics, Coach Red Myers of
Greenwood has retired, for the third time; and
Whereas, he coached championship football and track teams from 1950-57 at Dreher High School in Columbia before accepting the position as
alumni director at Erskine College, his alma mater; and
Whereas, a year later, when the Erskine basketball head coaching job
opened up, Coach Myers eagerly took the job, even though he had little
background in the sport; and
Whereas, he obviously learned quickly and well, because he eventually
made the NAIA Hall of Fame on the basis of his success; and
Whereas, the native of St. George compiled a 413-292 record in twenty-five years as the coach at Erskine before he retired the second time in
1983; and
Whereas, after a year off, he went to Lander College in Greenwood as
an assistant coach, and now he is retiring again, for the third time; and
Whereas, while at Erskine, his teams were the NAIA district champions
twice and thereby earned the right to compete in the national tournament
in Kansas City; and
Whereas, Coach Myers served on the NAIA executive committee for ten
years, as national tournament director one year, and president of the
NAIA one year; and
Whereas, he has also directed international competition in Australia,
Israel, and Mexico; and
Whereas, he is very highly regarded by his fellow coaches and by
everyone else associated with NAIA basketball; and
Whereas, he has been a tremendously successful coach and has been
loved, respected, and admired by the young men he has coached over the
years; and
Whereas, it is hard to keep a good man down; so, we would not be
surprised to see Red Myers come out of retirement yet again for the
excitement and rewards of athletics; and
Whereas, whatever Red Myers does, we know that he will be successful
because he is just that way, a sincere, talented, hard-working, and
dedicated individual who has always done what he enjoyed and done it
to perfection. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, commends Coach Red Myers of Greenwood for a career of
highly successful involvement in athletics and coaching and wishes him
happiness in his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Coach Red Myers.
