R.S. Corning, J.L.M. Cromer, Quinn, Scott and C.Y. Waites
A Concurrent Resolution congratulating "The State" newspaper of Columbia on
its one hundredth anniversary and extending the publishers, editors, writers,
and staff of "The State" best wishes for at least another century of
journalistic excellence and success.
03/07/91 House Introduced, adopted, sent to Senate HJ-2
03/07/91 Senate Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence SJ-1
A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING THE STATE NEWSPAPER OF
COLUMBIA ON ITS ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY AND
EXTENDING THE PUBLISHERS, EDITORS, WRITERS, AND
STAFF OF THE STATE BEST WISHES FOR AT LEAST
ANOTHER CENTURY OF JOURNALISTIC EXCELLENCE AND
SUCCESS.
Whereas, in February, 1891, the first edition of The State
newspaper was published in Columbia; and
Whereas, The State is the newspaper of South Carolina's capital
city but is read throughout the Palmetto State and well beyond the
boundaries of South Carolina; and
Whereas, the newspaper has played an integral part in South Carolina's
history, from giving its readers the founding publishers' views of
dissatisfaction with the policies of Ben Tillman to supporting the
Progressives in state government in the Teens, making genuine two-party politics in South Carolina a reality, and helping ease the way for
desegregation in the Fifties and Sixties; and
Whereas, The State has been well known and highly regarded
over the past ten decades for the integrity and the journalistic talent and
excellence of its editors, reporters, and writers; and
Whereas, South Carolinians are so accustomed to "waking up to
The State" every morning, and so dependent upon the
newspaper for coverage of local, state, national, and international news,
that it is quite impossible ever to imagine Columbia and the Palmetto
State without this old and dear friend providing company, enjoyment,
and spark at the beginning of each day; and
Whereas, The State's centennial celebration is a happy occasion
for countless thousands and is certainly very greatly deserving of the
recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, congratulates The State newspaper of Columbia on
its one hundredth anniversary and extends to the publishers, editors,
writers, and staff of The State best wishes for at least another
century of journalistic excellence and success.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr.
Frank M. McComas, publisher, and Mr. R. Sidney Crim, general
manager, at The State, P.O. Box 1333, Columbia, South
Carolina 29202.
