as State Forester, to thank him for his dedicated service to the State
Commission of Forestry, and to wish him well in his future endeavors.

A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE MR. ROBERT JACK GOULD UPON HIS
RETIREMENT AS STATE FORESTER, TO THANK HIM FOR HIS
DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE STATE COMMISSION OF
FORESTRY, AND TO WISH HIM WELL IN HIS FUTURE
ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Mr. Robert Jack Gould retired January 5, 1993, as State
Forester and after more than thirty-four years of professional forestry
with the State Commission of Forestry; and
Whereas, Mr. Gould graduated from Michigan State University in East
Lansing, Michigan, with a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in
forestry. In 1958 he began his service with the State Commission of
Forestry in Kingstree as Project Forester and Forest Fire Control
Forester within a four-county district; and
Whereas, Mr. Gould became Project Forester in Gaffney, in 1963 in
charge of forest management within a new three-county special project
area. In York in 1963 Mr. Gould worked within a two-county project
area; and
Whereas, as District Forester in 1964, Mr. Gould supervised
community activities within a four-county district moving to Columbia
in 1972 as Assistant Director for Forest Fire Control. In 1979 he
became Staff Forester, Information and Education Section; and
Whereas, from 1980 until 1986, Mr. Gould served as Assistant State
Forester first in the Administration Division and then in the Field
Operations Division; and
Whereas, after serving as Staff Director from 1986 until 1989, Mr.
Gould became Acting State Forester and was appointed as State
Forester by the commission December 5, 1989; and
Whereas, despite Mr. Gould's busy service within the State
Commission of Forestry, he found time to serve South Carolina in
numerous other positions: member of Lions International for twenty-three years, member of Society of American Foresters for more than
thirty-four years, charter member of Hallmark Shores Racquet Club in
Lexington County, member of Lexington United Methodist Church,
member of Trout Unlimited, Saluda River Chapter in Columbia,
member of Foresters Council of South Carolina since 1985, member
of Governor's Forest Disaster Salvage Council, member of the
National Association of State Foresters and Southern Group of State
Foresters, agency representative to the Heritage Trust Advisory Board,
agency representative to the Water Resources Commission, agency
representative to State Mapping Advisory Council, representative of
South Carolina in 1986 as one of Governor's delegates to the Southern
Growth Policies Board/Duke University, member of South Carolina
Forestry Association; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to take
this opportunity to thank Mr. Gould particularly for his dedicated and
professional response to the disaster created by Hurricane Hugo during
the fall of 1989; and
Whereas, Mr. Gould will remain active in retirement with his keen
interests in photography, fly fishing, woodworking, carving, and
boating; and
Whereas, the State will miss Robert Jack Gould but bid him farewell
with the assurance that his dedication and expertise in the forestry
industry will be felt by grateful South Carolinians for generations to
come. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly recognize Mr. Robert Jack
Gould upon his retirement as State Forester, thank him for his
dedicated service to the State Commission of Forestry, and wish him
well in his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Mr. Gould.
