 OF CHESTER AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

EXPRESSING SORROW AT THE DEATH OF EDWARD HOOD DAWSON OF CHESTER AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Whereas, Edward Hood Dawson of Chester died January 24, 1999, at the age of eighty-five; and

Whereas, he was a 1933 graduate of The Citadel and attended the University of South Carolina Law School; and

Whereas, he was a veteran of World War II, retiring with the rank of colonel, having served in the Coast Artillery and Anti-Aircraft in the Panama Canal Zone and other locations; and

Whereas, Edward Dawson lived his entire life in the city of Chester and spent five decades serving that city, first serving in elective office as a member of City Council; and

Whereas, he continued to serve with distinction as Mayor of Chester from 1967 to 1975; and

Whereas, following his tenure as mayor, Mr. Dawson became chairman of the Chester Planning and Zoning Commission for twenty-one years, and also served on the board of the Chester Metropolitan Water District; and

Whereas, he established G. R. Dawson & Son, Inc., a wholesale distribution company, with his father in 1935 and was president from 1955 until 1982; and

Whereas, Mr. Dawson was national president of the Toy Wholesalers of America in 1974 and served as a director for the group, served as president of Hamilton and Company, Investment Bankers from 1984 until his death, and was a member of the National Association of Security Dealers; and

Whereas, he was a past president of the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of South Carolina, the Chester Rotary Club, and the Chester Chamber of Commerce; served on the board of the South Caroliniana Society; and was a member of the South Carolina Historical Society, the Chester County Historical Society, the Old Purity Society, the Chester Assembly and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity; and

Whereas, Mr. Dawson was a devoted member of Purity Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and deacon, and authored "Purity and Its People," a history of the congregation from 1787 through 1987; and

Whereas, Edward Dawson was a devoted husband, married to Caroline Pryor Marion Dawson for 54 years; loving father of Ann Dawson Castle, Edward H. Dawson, Jr., and Robert L. Dawson; and beloved grandfather of six grandchildren: Caroline, Kathryn, Mary Mills, Edward, Catherine Pryor, and Robert; and

Whereas, Edward Hood Dawson was an outstanding member of his community and a dedicated public servant, respected and admired by all who knew him, and his presence will be missed greatly. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express the sorrow at the death of Edward Hood Dawson of Chester and extends its sympathy to his family and friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Dawson's family.
