A BILL
TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976,
BY ADDING SECTION 24-13-45 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT NO
PERSON MAY BE IMPRISONED FOR MORE THAN FIVE YEARS
FOR CONVICTION OF A SINGLE NONVIOLENT OFFENSE.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Article 1, Chapter 13, Title 24 of the 1976 Code is
amended by adding:
"Section 24-13-45. Except as a result of imprisonment for
a violent crime as defined in Section 16-1-60, no person may be
imprisoned for more than five years for conviction of a single
offense."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
