A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING ST. JOHN UNITED METHODIST
CHURCH OF GRANITEVILLE ON ITS ONE HUNDRED
FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY.
Whereas, soon after Graniteville Company was founded in Aiken
County in 1845, William Gregg commissioned an English architect
to design a church in the Gothic style, patterned after Westminster
Abbey in London, to serve the people of the Town of Graniteville;
and
Whereas, this was the beginning of St. John United Methodist
Church in 1846; and
Whereas, over the years, St. John has been the mother church to at
least six separate congregations in the area; the sanctuary of St.
John stands as a symbol of the faithful work of dedicated Christian
men and women concerned for God's work on earth and His
people; and
Whereas, St. John has a proud and lively heritage, and in 1979, the
church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and
Whereas, St. John's one hundred fiftieth anniversary, which the
church's members and many friends are celebrating this year, is an
occasion for great joy and reflection and is highly deserving of
special recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, congratulates St. John United Methodist Church of
Graniteville on its one hundred fiftieth anniversary.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
St. John United Methodist Church at Graniteville.
