RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE W. KEITH RICHARDSON OF CLINTON WHO
ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT AS HEAD COACH AND
ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AFTER WINNING TWO HUNDRED
THIRTY-NINE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMES AND SIX
STATE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN
TWENTY-FOUR SEASONS AT CLINTON HIGH SCHOOL.
Whereas, W. Keith Richardson of Clinton will retire as head coach
and athletic director effective at the end of the 1993 school year after
winning two hundred thirty-nine high school football games and six
state high school football championships in twenty-four seasons at
Clinton High School; and
Whereas, the Chester native led the Red Devils to state titles in 1972,
1975, 1977, 1978, 1985, and 1987 and is ranked ninth among all
South Carolina football coaches in career victories; and
Whereas, three other Clinton teams finished as state runner-up.
Clinton won sixteen region championships under Coach Richardson.
One hundred twenty-one of his two hundred thirty-nine victories were
by shutout; and
Whereas, Coach Richardson graduated from Presbyterian in 1964 and
went to work for Woodruff's W.L. Varner at Woodruff before taking
over at Clinton in 1969; and
Whereas, Coach Richardson knew coaching would be a part of his
future. "I'm one of the few people who knew what I wanted to
do," he said. "I wanted to be a player, and I wanted to
coach. I was fortunate to be able to do that"; and
Whereas, in explaining why he has been so successful, Coach
Richardson said, "Good players...we've had a lot of
overachievers here"; and
Whereas, Coach Richardson will continue as Executive Director of the
South Carolina Coaches Association. "It will keep me close to
coaches and athletes," he says. "I'm glad to be a part of
it."; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are proud to have this
opportunity to thank W. Keith Richardson for all he has done to shape
the lives of the young people in this State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly recognize W. Keith
Richardson of Clinton who announced his retirement as head coach
and athletic director after winning two hundred thirty-nine high school
football games and six state high school football championships in
twenty-four seasons at Clinton High School.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Coach Richardson.
