H 3396 Concurrent Resolution, By Wheeler

A concurrent RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERSECTION LOCATED AT THE JUNCTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 34 AND MCGEE TOWN ROAD IN LEE COUNTY "LEWIS W. BOONE MEMORIAL INTERSECTION" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS LOCATION CONTAINING THESE WORDS.

Whereas, Mr. Lewis W. Boone was born in Lee County on March 9, 1897. A private first class and a member of Company M, 118th Infantry, 30th Division of the United States Army, he served his country with honor and distinction during World War I from June 26, 1915, to April 10, 1919; and

Whereas, on October 11, 1918, while on duty as a runner in Vaux Andigny, France, he carried an important message through an artillery and machine gun barrage to battalion headquarters. He was wounded as he started back through the barrage to rejoin his company at the front lines; and

Whereas, Private First Class Boone was bestowed the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart for his extraordinary bravery and devotion to duty. He also was engaged in campaigns at St. Martin and Seville; and

Whereas, Mr. Boone departed his earthly life on October 28, 1956, and is buried in Cedar Creek Cemetery in Bishopville; and

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to commemorate the heroics of this brave son of the Palmetto State by naming an intersection in Lee County in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request the Department of Transportation name the intersection located at the junction of South Carolina Highway 34 and McGee Town Road in Lee County "Lewis W. Boone Memorial Intersection" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing these words.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
