 GIBSON OF CLARENDON COUNTY AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHIES TO HER FAMILY AND
 MANY FRIENDS.

EXPRESSING THE HEARTFELT SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF MRS. ANNIE VIRGINIA MARTIN GIBSON OF CLARENDON COUNTY AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHIES TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

WHEREAS, the members of the General Assembly are sad to learn of the passing of Mrs. Annie Virginia Martin Gibson of Clarendon County on Tuesday, March 6, 2001; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Gibson was the daughter of the late Mr. Hampton Martin and Mrs. Amanda Hilton Martin, and was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County; and

WHEREAS, she was the beloved wife of the late Mr. William "Bill" Gibson and together they were the proud parents of four children; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Gibson was an active member of Liberty Hill A.M.E. Church, having served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher and choir member and on a variety of special boards and committees; and

WHEREAS, she was committed to improving the education of Clarendon County students and proved so by being one of the first to sign the petition that brought about the Briggs v. Elliott case, one of the cases that led to the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. The Board of Education and an end to segregation in public schools; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Gibson continued her life of service to her community through her leadership as an Executive Board Member of the Clarendon County Branch of the NAACP and through her work in the Briggs-DeLaine-Pearson Organization; her efforts were recognized in May of 1999 when she received the "Order of the Palmetto", the highest honor awarded to a citizen of South Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Annie Virginia Martin Gibson will be sorely missed by her family and friends, but she will be forever remembered for her dedication and service to her community and this State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the members of the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly by this resolution express their heartfelt sorrow upon the death of Mrs. Annie Virginia Martin Gibson of Clarendon County and extend deepest sympathies to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mrs. Annie Virginia Martin Gibson.
