VERSIONS OF THIS BILL

3/7/2006

S. 1223

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE WOMAN'S CLUB OF WEST COLUMBIA AND ALL OF THE PRESENT AND PAST MEMBERS OF THIS WONDERFUL ORGANIZATION WHICH HAS DONE SO MUCH TO BENEFIT ITS COMMUNITY UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS ONE HUNDREDTH PreviousANNIVERSARYNext AND TO EXTEND TO THE WOMAN'S CLUB OF WEST COLUMBIA VERY BEST WISHES FOR ONE HUNDRED MORE YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES OF THE WEST COLUMBIA COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the members of the Senate of South Carolina are pleased to learn that in 2006 the Woman's Club of West Columbia will be celebrating its one hundredth PreviousanniversaryNext; and

Whereas, the Woman's Club of New Brookland was organized in the year 1906 and joined the General Federation of Women's Clubs in 1921; and

Whereas, the club was organized "for the mental pleasure and benefit of the members, for the civic uplift and improvement of the town, and for cooperation with other organizations for the promotion of the common good"; and

Whereas, since 1939 this club has been known as the Woman's Club of West Columbia, because at that time the town of New Brookland changed its name to West Columbia; and

Whereas, the Woman's Club of West Columbia, following the example of the national club, has always been involved in giving service to individuals, families, neighborhoods, and schools as well as being active in local, state, national, and international affairs; and

Whereas, in service to its community, the Woman's Club of West Columbia gives a scholarship to a deserving high school student from Brookland-Cayce High School or Airport High School each year. The club is also involved on a continuing basis with organizations that give aid to abused and needy children, and one of its PreviousannualNext projects is to help needy families at Christmas; and

Whereas, in a constant effort to help the children of their community, the members of the club also work with education programs for four and five-year-old children and were instrumental in helping start the Cayce-West Columbia Branch of the Lexington County Public Library; and

Whereas, perhaps the best example of Christian outreach by this committed and caring group of women is their 2004-2006 special project to mend hearts broken by the cycle of family abuse and neglect, with the goals of this special project to be accomplished by increasing awareness, providing innovative educational programs, and supporting those who share a common concern for children and families; and

Whereas, the unselfish service and community leadership shown by the Woman's Club of West Columbia has made a difference in the lives of so many citizens of West Columbia and Lexington County, and the members of the Senate by this resolution would like to publicly recognize and honor this truly outstanding organization on the occasion of its one hundredth PreviousanniversaryNext. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate recognize and honor the Woman's Club of West Columbia and all of the present and past members of this wonderful organization which has done so much to benefit its community upon the occasion of its one hundredth Previousanniversary, and to extend to the Woman's Club of West Columbia very best wishes for one hundred more years of service to the individuals and families of the West Columbia community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Dot Mathias, 2005-2006 President, Woman's Club of West Columbia.
