TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF PreviousANNETTENext MCLEOD SMITH, OF LEE COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN, EXTENDED FAMILY, MANY FRIENDS, AND THE BISHOPVILLE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of an extraordinary South Carolinian and native of Lee County, PreviousAnnetteNext McLeod Smith on February 24, 2008; and

Whereas, born PreviousAnnetteNext Irene Jackson, she was the daughter of the late William Douglas Jackson and Lillie Julia Lee. She was Aunt to former Senator T. Bruce Smith II who served in the General Assembly from District No. 9, Chesterfield -Dillon-Lee-Marlboro Counties; and

Whereas, she was a loving wife to her husband of 56 years, the late Wilfred Carroll Smith, with whom she had three children: the late Benton Douglas Smith of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Denny McLeod Smith of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and Fletcher Lee Smith of Bishopville, South Carolina; and

Whereas, she was a loving grandmother to nine grandchildren: Wesley, Doug, Tom, Michele, Valerie, Lori, Ashley, Blaire, and Collins; and

Whereas, she touched the lives of many of the children of Bishopville as their kindergarten teacher and their Sunday School teacher; she was also a homemaker, an avid gardener, and seamstress; and

Whereas, she expressed her faith and joy in the Lord at Bishopville First Baptist Church for 67 years; and

Whereas, PreviousAnnetteNext Smith is remembered as a gracious hostess, a person given to artistic expression, a person of meticulous etiquette, disciplined, possessor of a generous nature, one who loved the unlovely...a saint. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of PreviousAnnette McLeod Smith, of Lee County, and extend their deepest sympathy to her children, grandchildren, extended family, many friends, and the entire Bishopville community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Polly O. Smith, Denny McLeod Smith, and Fletcher Lee Smith in remembrance of their beloved mother.
