 successful and respected businesses, the R. L. Bryan Company, upon the
 occasion of its one hundred fiftieth anniversary and to express the best
 wishes of the General Assembly to the R. L. Bryan Company and each of its
 employees for continued success in the future.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST SUCCESSFUL AND RESPECTED BUSINESSES, THE R. L. BRYAN COMPANY, UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS ONE HUNDRED FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY AND TO EXPRESS THE BEST WISHES OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE R. L. BRYAN COMPANY AND EACH OF ITS EMPLOYEES FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE.

Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to learn that The R. L. Bryan Company will celebrate its one hundred fiftieth anniversary in February, 1994; and

Whereas, this distinguished business is recognized as the oldest business in Richland County and one of the oldest in South Carolina and the United States and will observe its sesquicentennial anniversary on February 17, 1994; and

Whereas, the business began as a small book and stationery store on Main Street in the City of Columbia in 1844. The company remained in the control of the Bryan family until 1986 when they sold their interest to the employees of the company under an employee stock ownership plan. The company is a multidimensional commercial supplier, printer, and provider which began its printing operation in 1885, added the furniture division in 1910, and in 1920, also added commercial office machines. From this modest beginning grew one of the State's most respected and prosperous businesses which plays a major role in contributing to the economy and progress of the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, today, continuing the tradition of their predecessors over the past one hundred fifty years, Board Chairman William B. Harley, President Charles H. Dickerson, and many of the other officers and directors of the company, participate actively in civic affairs and programs that enhance the quality of life in the communities in which they serve; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, on behalf of the people of the State of South Carolina, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate the men and women of The R. L. Bryan Company, past and present, who contributed so much to the remarkable achievements of this outstanding company on the upcoming occasion of one hundred fifty years of continuous operation under America's free enterprise system. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby congratulate one of South Carolina's most successful and respected businesses, The R. L. Bryan Company, upon the occasion of its one hundred fiftieth anniversary and express their best wishes to The R. L. Bryan Company and each of its employees for continued success in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. William B. Harley, Chairman of the Board, and Mr. Charles H. Dickerson, President of The R. L. Bryan Company.
