HUNDRED SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SETTLEMENT OF THE TOWN OF BEECH ISLAND IN
AIKEN COUNTY ON BEECH ISLAND HERITAGE DAY, SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1997.

A HOUSE RESOLUTION
SALUTING THE HONORABLE STROM THURMOND, THE
LONGEST-SERVING MEMBER OF THE UNITED STATES
SENATE, AND WELCOMING HIM TO THE HISTORIC TWO
HUNDRED SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SETTLEMENT
OF THE TOWN OF BEECH ISLAND IN AIKEN COUNTY ON
BEECH ISLAND HERITAGE DAY, SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1997.
Whereas, the Honorable Strom Thurmond has this spring attained the
record for longevity of service in the United States Senate and is now
in the history books as the longest-serving senator in American
history; and
Whereas, the citizens of South Carolina are very proud of this record
and are happy for our esteemed senator that he has achieved this
status; and
Whereas, Senator Thurmond is participating in Beech Island Heritage
Day on Saturday, May 24, 1997 and is an honored guest at this
celebration; and
Whereas, Beech Island Heritage Day commemorates the two hundred
sixtieth anniversary of the Town of Beech Island, originally named
New Windsor and established by a group of Swiss settlers in 1737;
and
Whereas, this anniversary is a historic occasion and, combined with
Senator Thurmond's presence and participation, is a great day in the
history of the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by
this resolution, salutes the Honorable Strom Thurmond, the
longest-serving member of the United States Senate, and welcomes
him to the historic two hundred sixtieth anniversary of the Town of
Beech Island in Aiken County on Beech Island Heritage Day,
Saturday, May 24, 1997.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Senator Thurmond and the Beech Island Heritage Day Committee.
