A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING WILLIAMSBURG TECHNICAL COLLEGE UPON ITS THIRTIETH PreviousANNIVERSARYNext AND COMMENDING DR. JAMES C. WILLIAMSON, PRESIDENT, AND THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR THE COLLEGE'S MANY SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PEOPLE OF WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, July 1, 1999, marks the thirtieth PreviousanniversaryNext of Williamsburg Technical College whose educational presence in the Pee Dee has made a significant contribution to the people and economy of Williamsburg County; and

Whereas, in the 1960's, in response to the dearth of educational and job training opportunities in Williamsburg County and the resulting exodus of the county's youth and increased poverty, an innovative training concept began to emerge; and

Whereas, this concept materialized in the summer of 1969 in the form of the Williamsburg Regional Manpower Training Center established to provide comprehensive training for a skilled work force, and to attract industry; and

Whereas, within one year, the campus was completed on the edge of Kingstree, which was the beginning of what is now Williamsburg Technical College; and

Whereas, this concept was extraordinary for its time in that it was the first effort to provide such a concentration of technical, adult, and vocational education and to offer such extensive employment services; and

Whereas, in 1977, with steady growth and an increasing role in the welfare of the county and the State, the college became fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and this accreditation was reaffirmed in 1982 and 1993; and

Whereas, over the past thirty years, Williamsburg Tech has seen enormous growth and expansion of its curriculum including college transfer programs and accreditation in 1998 of the college's associate degrees in General Business and in Office Systems Technology, putting the college's business programs on a par with business programs at colleges and universities internationally; and

Whereas, Williamsburg Technical College has, for three decades, offered students a positive learning environment while increasing the number of employment opportunities available locally and providing industry a reliable, current, well-trained labor force; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to commend President Dr. James C. Williamson and the Board of Trustees for their outstanding leadership as Williamsburg Technical College celebrates its thirtieth PreviousanniversaryNext and to recognize the many accomplishments of Williamsburg Tech and its ongoing contributions to enhancing the quality of life for the people of Williamsburg County and to advancing South Carolina's role in the world marketplace. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Williamsburg Technical College upon its thirtieth Previousanniversary and commend Dr. James C. Williamson, President, and the Board of Trustees for the college's many significant contributions to the people of Williamsburg County and the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. James C. Williamson, President, Williamsburg Technical College, and to the Board of Trustees, Mr. Gregory B. Askins, Mr. Walter H. Brown, Ms. Lorraine B. Dimery, Dr. Kenneth Gardner, Mr. Harry L. Huell, Mr. F. E. Huggins, Jr., Mr. M. Oneal Kirby, Mr. J. Braxton Lovett, Mr. Tommy J. Nesmith, Dr. Veretta J. Sabb, and Ms. Joan B. Thompson.
