A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND THE STUDENT TEAM FROM THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM OF WILSON HIGH SCHOOL IN FLORENCE FOR WINNING TOP HONORS IN THE SOUTH CAROLINA BAR'S PreviousANNUALNext "WE THE PEOPLE...THE CITIZEN AND THE CONSTITUTION" STATE COMPETITION AND TO WISH THEM A SUCCESSFUL TRIP TO WASHINGTON, D. C. IN APRIL WHEN THEY REPRESENT SOUTH CAROLINA IN THE NATIONAL COMPETITION.

Whereas, the South Carolina Bar's Law Related Educational Division challenges high schools throughout the State to join an PreviousannualNext competition focusing on the United States Constitution called "We the People...the Citizen and the Constitution". The students who participate in the competition study thirty lessons on the Constitution covering such diverse topics as its historical, political, and philosophical background, the Bill of Rights, and citizen responsibilities under the Constitution; and

Whereas, on February 1, 2001, students from the International Baccalaureate program at Wilson High School in Mrs. Yvonne Rhodes' American Government class won the state competition. This was the first time a team from the Sixth Congressional District has won the competition; and

Whereas, the competition was judged by lawyers, teachers, and representatives from the offices of Governor Hodges, Senator Strom Thurmond, Congressmen Lindsey Graham and James DeMint, and the State Senate; and

Whereas, the students who won the state competition are Lakisha Boston, Lynette Carr, Christine Chen, Rebecca Derrick, Ashunti Drummond, Elizabeth Fortnum, Albert Hayward, Anthony Henderson, Benjamin Ingram, Hsiao "Janny" Liu, Christine Moss, Jason Owens, PreviousAnnaNext Stewart, Tyler Thomas, and Dheepa Varadarajan; and

Whereas, on April 21, 2001, this highly motivated team will represent South Carolina in the national competition to be held in Washington, D. C.; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are extremely proud of the accomplishments of this exceptional group of teenagers who have worked so diligently to achieve their goal of thoroughly learning the federal Constitution, its impact on citizens' lives, and their civic responsibilities. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives commend and congratulate the student team from the International Baccalaureate program of Wilson High School in Florence for winning top honors in the South Carolina Bar's Previousannual "We the People...the Citizen and the Constitution" state competition and wish them a successful trip to Washington, D. C. in April when they represent South Carolina in the national competition.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Yvonne Rhodes on behalf of the International Baccalaureate students in her American Government class.
