A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON LEARNING OF THE DEATH OF HARRY LEE HOWARD OF NORTH PreviousAUGUSTANext, ONE OF THE PALMETTO STATE'S LEADING BUSINESSMEN OF HIS DAY AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr. Harry Lee Howard on February 14, 2000; and

Whereas, he was born in China Grove, North Carolina later moving to North PreviousAugustaNext where he became a distinguished businessman and community leader; and

Whereas, as his holdings in the Belk Department Store chain steadily grew and during his tenure as Executive Vice President and partner of the Belk Howard Stores he established a true corporate headquarters in North PreviousAugustaNext; and

Whereas, Harry Howard was well known and respected for his business acumen, leadership, and generosity not only in the North PreviousAugustaNext community but also across the Palmetto State; and

Whereas, he served thirty years on the Board of Directors of Bank of America and was a member of the YMCA Board of Directors, the Lions Club, and B.P.O.E. Lodge Number 205; and

Whereas, his investment to the community and devotion to public service was recognized on many occasions including being selected as a Paul Harris Fellow and receiving the Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind Award, and the North PreviousAugustaNext Chamber of Commerce's Citizen of the Year Award; and

Whereas, he was deeply admired and dearly loved by the people of North PreviousAugustaNext and he will be greatly missed; and

Whereas, we want Mr. Howard's family and many friends to know they have been uppermost in our thoughts and have our deepest sympathy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon learning of the death of Mr. Harry Lee Howard of North PreviousAugusta, one of the Palmetto State's leading businessmen of his day, and extending deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Howard's family.
