A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND PHILIP A. "PHIL" KENT OF AUGUSTA, EDITORIAL WRITER, EDITORIAL PAGE EDITOR, AND POLITICAL COLUMNIST FOR THE AUGUSTA CHRONICLE FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED CAREER AT THE CHRONICLE AS HE LEAVES HIS POSITION TO BECOME PRESIDENT OF SOUTHEASTERN LEGAL FOUNDATION, AN ATLANTA-BASED LAW FIRM AND POLICY CENTER.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have recently learned that Philip A. "Phil" Kent of Augusta, editorial writer, editorial page editor, and political columnist for The Augusta Chronicle for the past twenty-five years will be leaving the Chronicle to become president of the Southeastern Legal Foundation, an Atlanta-based public interest law firm and policy center founded in 1976; and
Whereas, Phil Kent is a widely respected and award-winning journalist who has been a strong voice for conservative government. He is affectionately known as "Mr. Conservative" throughout the Savannah River area of South Carolina and Georgia for his deep convictions and eloquently expressed beliefs; and
Whereas, in 1981 and 1982, he served in Washington, D. C. as press secretary and public affairs advisor to Senator Strom Thurmond. After his work with Senator Thurmond, he returned to The Augusta Chronicle as editorial page editor. He is a native of Auburn, New York, and a 1973 graduate of the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia. He is also co-founder and chairman of the board of advisors of the Washington-based Editorial Information Network, an organization providing Capitol Hill information to the media; and
Whereas, Phil Kent is a member of the National Conference of Editorial Writers, the Military Order of World Wars, and is a member of the board of advisors for Coalition for a Voting America, a nonpartisan voter education organization. He is a former board member of the Georgia Press Association, the Augusta Museum of History, the Greater Augusta Arts Council, and the Augusta Kiwanis Club; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize this outstanding journalist and commend him for an extraordinary newspaper career as he leaves his position with the Chronicle for new challenges with the Southeastern Legal Foundation. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly commend Philip A. "Phil" Kent of Augusta, editorial writer, editorial page editor, and political columnist for The Augusta Chronicle, for his distinguished career at the Chronicle as he leaves his position to become president of Southeastern Legal Foundation, an Atlanta-based law firm and policy center.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Kent.
