AN ACT TO ESTABLISH SINGLE-MEMBER ELECTION DISTRICTS FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD OF AIKEN COUNTY, PROVIDE FOR THE ELECTION OF ITS MEMBERS, ESTABLISH THE TERMS, AND PROVIDE A TRANSITION PERIOD FOR THOSE MEMBERS ELECTED AFTER 1986.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Single-member election districts established

SECTION 1. One member of the Aiken County School Board must reside in and be elected from each of the following defined single-member election districts for terms of four years by the electors within each election district:

Transition provisions

SECTION 2. (a) At the time of the 1986 general election:

(1) Only candidates from districts 2, 5, and 6 may be elected for terms of four years.

(2) Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 1, two at-large seats which become vacant in 1986 as provided by Act 503 of 1982 may be filled for terms of two years only.

(b) At the time of the 1988 general election, candidates from districts 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9 must be elected for terms of four years. Except of the six single-member seats to be filled, the term of one of the board members must be for two years only. The county election commission shall determine by lot, within ninety days after the general election of 1986, the district from which a board member must be elected for a two-year term at the time of the general election of 1988. After the 1988 election, board members must be elected for terms of four years.

Time effective

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
