A HOUSE RESOLUTION

HONORING THE MEMORY OF LAWYER AND PUBLIC SERVANT GRAFTON GEDDES "G.G." DOWLING OF BEAUFORT COUNTY, WHO DIED PreviousAUGUSTNext 13, 2001, AND EXTENDING TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS THE CONDOLENCES OF HIS FELLOW MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

Whereas, Grafton Geddes "G.G." Dowling of Beaufort County died PreviousAugustNext 13, 2001; and

Whereas, the eighty-five-year-old native of Greenwood began his long career in the law and public service upon his graduation from the University of South Carolina School of Law, entering the practice of law with his brother Joab Dowling in Beaufort in 1938; and

Whereas, his public service included membership in the South Carolina House of Representatives; and

Whereas, G.G. Dowling's expansive service to the community of Beaufort earned him the Rotary Bowl Award for outstanding community service in 1966; and

Whereas, his statesmanship was evidenced in his service as Chairman of the South Carolina Highway Commission, Port Royal Ports Authority, South Carolina Probation, Parole and Pardon Board, and State Chamber of Commerce, and President of the University of South Carolina Alumni Association; and

Whereas, his national and international service included his military service during World War II and a five-year appointment as presidential delegate to the United Nations Conference on Rules of Warfare in Geneva, Switzerland; and

Whereas, G.G. Dowling was the founder of the Bank of Beaufort and served as its president and chairman; and

Whereas, he also assisted in the establishment of the Beaufort branch of the University of South Carolina, where he taught economics and political science as an adjunct professor for ten years; and

Whereas, he was devoted to Edith, his wife of more than fifty years, and their children, David Dowling of St. PreviousAugustineNext, Florida, Geddes Dowling of Atlanta, Georgia, and Elizabeth Dowling-Sendor of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and

Whereas, it is fitting for the members of the House of Representatives of South Carolina to recognize his legacy of service to his community, State, and nation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives do hereby honor the memory of lawyer and public servant Grafton Geddes "G.G." Dowling of Beaufort County, who died PreviousAugust 13, 2001, and extend their condolences to his family and friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his wife, Mrs. Edith B. Dowling.
