A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND THANK THE VOLUNTEERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA JOINT SERVICE GUARD OF HONOR WHO FORMED THE MILITARY GUARD FOR CONGRESSMAN FLOYD SPENCE'S CASKET IN THE ROTUNDA OF THE STATE HOUSE DURING THE PUBLIC VISITATION PreviousAUGUSTNext 21 AND 22, 2001, AND RENDERED FULL MILITARY HONORS WHILE TRANSPORTING THE BODY AND INCIDENT TO HIS BURIAL.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina pay tribute to the South Carolina Joint Service Guard of Honor participants, comprised of men and women volunteers from the South Carolina Army and the Air National Guard, who caringly and reverently guarded the casket of Congressman Floyd Spence in the Rotunda of the State House on PreviousAugustNext 21 and 22, 200l; and

Whereas, members of the Honor Guard were deployed PreviousAugustNext 17, 2001, to bring Congressman Spence's body and family home from Jackson, Mississippi. They guarded the body in the State House Monday and Tuesday morning moving only every thirty minutes when they were replaced by eight fresh guards; and

Whereas, Tuesday, members of the Honor Guard carried Congressman Spence's casket, draped in the American flag, down the steps of the State House to a waiting caisson. Members of the Honor Guard escorted the body to First Baptist Church for the funeral service; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Joint Service Guard of Honor participants for the funeral of Congressman Floyd Spence were Colonel Berry L. Whereas, the House of Representatives is proud to honor the members of the Joint Honor Team who stood at attention around Congressman Floyd Spence's casket while family, friends, and constituents came to the State House to pay tribute to our former United States Representative. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and thank the volunteers of the South Carolina Joint Service Guard of Honor who formed the military guard for Congressman Floyd Spence's casket in the Rotunda of the State House during the public visitation PreviousAugust 21 and 22, 2001, and rendered full military honors while transporting the body and incident to his burial.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Major General Stanhope Sifford Spears, Adjutant General for South Carolina.
