A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO EXTEND THE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF MR.
FRANK A. MCLEOD, JR., OF SUMTER COUNTY,
DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN, CIVIC LEADER, AND RETIRED
BUSINESSMAN.
Whereas, Franklin Alexander McLeod, Jr., of Sumter County died on
May 4, 1992, having served his nation, State, community, and church
with distinction; and
Whereas, Mr. McLeod was born on August 13, 1919, in Sumter, the son
of the late Solicitor Frank A. McLeod and Eudora Kirk McLeod; and
Whereas, Mr. McLeod graduated from Sumter High School in 1937 and
attended Wofford College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha
fraternity; and
Whereas, during World War II, he served his nation in the United States
Army as a first lieutenant in the Middle Eastern Theatre as a provost
marshall in Iran; and
Whereas, after the war, he served his State as the personnel director for
the South Carolina Penitentiary from 1947-49 and as a probation officer
for the South Carolina Probation, Parole, and Pardon Board, first in
Columbia, and then in Sumter for the Third Judicial Circuit, until he
entered private business in 1954; and
Whereas, for many years he was engaged in the outdoor advertising
business as an owner, director, and officer of Crocker Sign Company,
later known as Cromac Outdoor Advertising Company; and
Whereas, he was active in the civic and community affairs of Sumter,
serving as president of the Sumter YMCA Board, as board chairman of
the Sunset Country Club, as president of The Assembly, and as a board
member of Kiwanis Club of Sumter; he also was a former vice president
of the Clan MacLeod Society and a member of the Huguenot Society;
and
Whereas, as a churchman he served as senior warden of the Church of
the Holy Comforter, as a member of the Diocesan Council, as a member
of the Trustees of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, and as a
board member of the South Carolina Episcopal Home at Still Hopes; and
Whereas, survivors are his wife, Elizabeth Griffith McLeod; four sons,
Edwin D. Corning of Sumter and Representatives Roland S. Corning,
Frank A. McLeod, III, and Attorney John M.G. McLeod, all of
Columbia; a daughter, Elizabeth McLeod Britton (Mrs. John P.) of
Greenville; and six grandchildren. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly extend their sympathy to the
family and friends of Mr. Frank A. McLeod, Jr., of Sumter County,
distinguished citizen, civic leader, and retired businessman.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the
family of Mr. Frank A. McLeod, Jr.
