 Charleston, South Carolina, on the commemoration of his 50th anniversary in
 the Catholic priesthood and to thank him for his dedication to his church, his
 community and the State of South Carolina.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE REVEREND JOSEPH J. MURPHY OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, ON THE COMMEMORATION OF HIS 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN THE CATHOLIC PRIESTHOOD AND TO THANK HIM FOR HIS DEDICATION TO HIS CHURCH, HIS COMMUNITY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the Reverend Joseph J. Murphy was born in humble beginnings on Charleston's Meeting Street on the first day of December, 1915, and;

Whereas, in the same month he was baptized into the Catholic faith in South Carolina's venerable St. Mary's Church, and;

Whereas, young Joseph Murphy was educated at the Craft School and the High School of Charleston and received his college education at Niagara University and thereafter entered the priesthood, and;

Whereas, Joseph J. Murphy became the Reverend Joseph J. Murphy on April 24, 1943 upon his ordination by His Excellency, Most Reverend Emmett Walsh, Bishop of the Diocese of Charleston, and;

Whereas, Reverend Joseph J. Murphy celebrated his first Mass the following day, Easter Sunday, 1943, and;

Whereas, the Reverend Joseph J. Murphy has been about the Lord's work throughout the State while serving his Church in Charleston, Spartanburg, North Augusta and returning to Charleston in 1963, and; Whereas, prior to retiring, Father Murphy served his last 8 years of active priesthood at St. Mary's Church, the place of his baptism and his spiritual home, and;

Whereas, Charleston's beloved "Father Joe" remains active in his community and is ever available to those in need of a strong shoulder, a willing ear, an understanding heart and a peaceful spirit, and;

Whereas, on Sunday, April 25, 1993 the Reverend Joseph J. Murphy marks 50 years as a priest serving his God, his Church and his people.

Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the entire membership of the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly of South Carolina congratulates the Reverend Joseph J. Murphy on the anniversary of his 50th year in the Catholic priesthood and wishes to thank him for his selfless dedication to the people of South Carolina and prays for his continued good health and active involvement in the affairs of his community and State.

Be it further resolved that this Resolution be presented to Father Murphy at the commemoration of his 50th anniversary and a copy of this resolution be forwarded to His Excellency, the Most Reverend David B. Thompson, Bishop of the Diocese of Charleston.
