A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING CHARLESTON SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
ON ITS THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY, AND COMMENDING THIS
OUTSTANDING INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION FOR ITS
COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE IN THE AREA OF HIGHER
LEARNING.
Whereas, Charleston Southern University is celebrating its thirtieth
anniversary in 1994, and, to honor the proud heritage of Charleston
Southern, the school will celebrate Founders' Week April 9-15, 1994;
and
Whereas, based on the theme "Preparing Leaders for the 21st
Century", a Founders' Week Committee, comprised of former and
current faculty, staff, students, trustees, and individuals who played key
roles in the establishment of CSU, has made extensive plans for the
week-long celebration; and
Whereas, the trustees of this outstanding institution previously adopted
"academic excellence in a Christian environment" as the
school's mission statement, and the University has fully lived up to the
promises and goals of this mission statement through the years; and
Whereas, the year 1994 also heralds the beginning of Dr. Jairy C.
Hunter, Jr.'s tenth year as president of CSU; and
Whereas, Dr. Hunter, the school's second president, has provided
dynamic leadership and has guided the school to many outstanding
accomplishments; and
Whereas, the 1994 Board of Trustees of Charleston Southern University
includes Dr. Ernest W. Alford, Jr., of Spartanburg, Mrs. Mary Ann
Bishop of Pawleys Island, Mrs. Betty B. Blackwell of Kershaw, Dr. M.
Wayne Brown of Myrtle Beach, Mr. Robert H. Edwards of Lancaster,
Mr. Thomas L. Farris of North Augusta, Reverend Hubert Faulkenberry
of Rock Hill, Dr. W. Gregory Horton of Simpsonville, Dr. James L.
Hudgins of Columbia, Mrs. Diane Jackson of Gaffney, Reverend Bev
Kennedy of Hartsville, Reverend Earl Lewers of Greenville, Reverend
Owen McAlister of Dorchester, Mr. Kip Miller of Greenville, Mr.
William C. Morris of Lake City, Mr. Thomas C. Nichols, Jr. of
Columbia, Dr. Fred K. Norris, Jr. of Eutawville, Mr. C. Ronald Payne
of Bishopville, Mr. Johnny B. Rhodes of Walterboro, Reverend Herman
R. Robinson, III, of Charleston, Mr. Lloyd E. Sineath of Hanahan, Mrs.
Gloria Thiem of Mount Pleasant, Mr. Johnny E. Ward of Moncks
Corner, Dr. W. Floyd Whitfield of Charleston, and Mr. Jerry Williams
of Lancaster; and
Whereas, besides Dr. Hunter, the administration of the University
includes the following officers: Dr. A. Kennerley Bonnette, Jr., Provost
and Vice President for Academic Affairs; Mr. Rick B. Brewer, Assistant
to the President; Mr. John L. Hosey, Vice President for Business Affairs;
Dr. Larry L. Sale, Vice President for Development; Dr. Robert Stevens,
Vice President for Enrollment Management; and Dr. Bruce Harshbarger,
Vice President for Student Services/Dean of Students; and
Whereas, we are greatly pleased to have this opportunity to recognize
Charleston Southern University for its commitment to excellence in
higher learning, and we share in the joy of the school's celebration of its
thirtieth anniversary. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, congratulates Charleston Southern University on its thirtieth
anniversary and commends this outstanding institution of higher
education for its commitment to excellence in the area of higher
learning.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr.
Jairy C. Hunter, Jr., President of Charleston Southern University.
