 members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina to William J.
 Knowles of Charleston County for his outstanding and dedicated service to the
 South Carolina Department of Social Services on the occasion of his
 retirement.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO WILLIAM J. KNOWLES OF CHARLESTON COUNTY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are saddened to learn that William J. Knowles will retire on April 14, 1995, from the South Carolina Department of Social Services; and

Whereas, everyone is saddened because Mr. Knowles' retirement will be a great loss to the State Department of Social Services; and

Whereas, Bill Knowles first came to the Charleston County Department of Social Services serving as Director in August of 1971, and faithfully served in this capacity until April of 1994;

Whereas, Bill was promoted to the Deputy State Director of the Office of Program Policy and Oversight for the South Carolina Department of Social Services from March 1994 to present; and

Whereas, he served in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1967 after twenty years service to his country; and

Whereas, Bill Knowles was honored by receiving the Public Service Award from the United States Department of Health and Human Services; the Leadership Award from Charleston County; the Leadership Award of the American Public Welfare Association; and the Leadership Award from the National Association of Counties; and

Whereas, he has served Charleston County and the Palmetto State as a board member of the National Association of Counties, past President of the National Association of County Human Services Administrators of the National Association of Counties, a member of the National Association of Counties Welfare Reform Task Force, and many other boards and committees; and

Whereas, the respect this individual has attained from his associates, colleagues, and friends is evidenced by his community activities, affiliations, honors, and awards. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend their congratulations and best wishes to William J. Knowles of Charleston County for his outstanding and dedicated service to the South Carolina Department of Social Services on the occasion of his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to William J. Knowles.
