A Concurrent Resolution expressing sorrow at the death of J. C. "Doc" Edwards
of Clarendon County and extending sympathy to his family and many friends.

05/09/95 House Introduced, adopted, sent to Senate HJ-20
05/10/95 Senate Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence SJ-10

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING SORROW AT THE DEATH OF J.C. "DOC" EDWARDS OF CLARENDON COUNTY AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, J.C. "Doc" Edwards of Clarendon County, a beloved institution in his community, has died; and

Whereas, thirty-three years ago, "Doc" placed a pickle jar on the counter of his sandwich shop in Manning; that year, $54.00 was collected for the pet project of the gentleman who ran the little restaurant, with the sign out front proclaiming his as the worst coffee in town; by the time of his death, Doc Edwards would raise over $110,000 for the children he loved so dearly; and

Whereas, in August, 1972, after eighteen years, Doc decided to close the small shop that had become such a fixture in Manning; when this happened, many residents of the town were concerned over losing the annual celebration of Doc's birthday on March twenty-first; this was always the big day for "Doc's kids"; anyone contributing to the jar's contents drank free coffee; however, in March, 1973, Doc went to "jail"; a special cell was set-up on the courthouse square in Manning, and Doc vowed not to leave his cell, or even have any of his own birthday cake, until $3,000 had been raised for "his kids"; and

Whereas, Doc Edwards was recognized locally, as well as abroad, as a driving force for the children, and adults, in Clarendon County; and

Whereas, he was the husband of Dot Edwards, former Manning city council member; and

Whereas, it would be a gigantic understatement to say that Doc Edwards will be missed; he brought so much love, care, concern, and help to the good people of his community that he will always be remembered and greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, are pleased to have this opportunity to pay tribute to the memory of a truly outstanding humanitarian, J.C. "Doc" Edwards of Clarendon County, and the members express sorrow at his death and extend sympathy to his family and his many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of J.C. "Doc" Edwards.
