 A SENATE RESOLUTION TO OFFER THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE
 TO DR. SHINGARA S. SANDHU UPON BEING NAMED THE 1996 SOUTH CAROLINA SENIOR
 COLLEGE PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR.

TO OFFER THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE TO DR. SHINGARA S. SANDHU UPON BEING NAMED THE 1996 SOUTH CAROLINA SENIOR COLLEGE PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, Dr. Shingara S. Sandhu, a professor of chemistry at Claflin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina, was a proud recipient of the 1996 South Carolina Senior College Professor of the Year Award, presented by the Office of the Governor; and

Whereas, Dr. Sandhu began his teaching career at Claflin College on August 24, 1970, and over the past 26 years has dedicated his life to educating others; and

Whereas, Dr. Sandhu has been instrumental in securing state-of-the-art laboratory and computer equipment, establishing pre-college activities for high school students and increasing the number of minority students who opt for careers in science, engineering and mathematics; and

Whereas, Dr. Sandhu's pre-college program began in 1988 with 20 students and has since grown to a program that encompasses almost

300 middle and high school students and includes Summer Research Internships, The Summer Science Camp and The Saturday Academy; and

Whereas, a recent proposal coauthored by Dr. Sandhu secured a $249,000 grant for Claflin College for community development in three Orangeburg city neighborhoods; and

Whereas, Dr. Sandhu is the director of Claflin's Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, the president of the Faculty Senate and a member of the Long-Range Strategies and Planning Board; and

Whereas, Dr. Sandhu's dedication to his profession reaches far beyond the classroom and has had a positive impact on the careers of numerous young people within the Claflin College community; and

Whereas, Dr. Sandhu has been prestigiously recognized as the 1996 South Carolina Senior Professor of the Year. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of South Carolina recognize the outstanding achievement of Dr. Shingara S. Sandhu, upon being named the 1996 Senior College Professor of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Shingara S. Sandhu.
