CHARLESTON AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF MELVIN G. GOTTSCHALG OF CHARLESTON AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are deeply saddened to learn that Melvin G. Gottschalg of Charleston passed away on the evening of December 31, 2000; and
Whereas, he was born August 19, 1921, in Plymouth, Nebraska, and was a graduate of Doane College in Crete, Nebraska; and
Whereas, Mr. Gottschalg served honorably in the United States Army Intelligence Agency during World War II for thirty-nine months with assignments in England, North Africa, and the European Theatre; and
Whereas, he worked for more than twenty-five years at Goer Manufacturing in Charleston before he retired from his position as a sales manager and also served his community in a number of civic endeavors; and
Whereas, Mr. Gottschalg was a life-long Republican who worked hard to build the party in this State and elsewhere. He was a former York County Republican Chairman who was instrumental in building the party in the Lake Wylie community and promoting political awareness throughout York County and was actively involved in precinct organization, voter turnout, and local, state, and national campaigns; and
Whereas, Melvin G. Gottschalg is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorene Ostrander Gottschalg, of Charleston; two daughters, Mary Katzman and Jane Wolper, both of Charleston; and son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Rhett Gottschalg, of Alpharetta, Georgia; and four grandchildren; and
Whereas, with the death of this fine man at the age of seventy-nine, the people of South Carolina have lost a successful businessman, a political and community leader, and a good friend. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Melvin G. Gottschalg of Charleston and extend deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Dorene Ostrander Gottschalg.
