 PAWLEYS ISLAND, FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STUDY AND
 PRESERVATION OF SOUTHERN HISTORY AND CULTURE THROUGH HIS OUTSTANDING
 ASSISTANCE WITH PROGRAMS FOCUSING ON THE ARTS.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE GIFTED STORYTELLER, EXCEPTIONAL LITERARY ARTIST, AND GENEROUS PHILANTHROPIST, DR. LEE R. MINTON OF PAWLEYS ISLAND, FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STUDY AND PRESERVATION OF SOUTHERN HISTORY AND CULTURE THROUGH HIS OUTSTANDING ASSISTANCE WITH PROGRAMS FOCUSING ON THE ARTS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned of the outstanding philanthropic service of Dr. Lee R. Minton of Pawleys Island; and

Whereas, such an exceptional record is worthy of recognition; and

Whereas, Lee Minton was born August 15, 1929, in Baxter, Tennessee, and was an accomplished ophthalmologist in Nashville before retiring at the age of fifty. For the next fourteen years, he divided his residence between Pawleys Island and London, England, before making his permanent home in Pawleys; and

Whereas, Dr. Minton has touched many lives throughout his life. Since he has lived in Pawleys Island, he has founded numerous musical and cultural arts organizations including the Festival of Music and Art at Pawleys Island, the Pawleys Island Miracles of Zion Singers, and the Pawleys Island Youth Music Festival; and

Whereas, in 2001, the board of the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art unanimously voted to change the festival to the Minton Festival of Music and Art in honor of Dr. Minton; and

Whereas, in September 2001, Dr. Minton was presented with the Waccamaw Award from the Waccamaw Center for Historical and Cultural Studies at Coastal Carolina University for his philanthropic contributions to the arts, his efforts to better human relations, and his generous spirit; and

Whereas, as an additional tribute to his overwhelming charitable contributions, Dr. Minton has been nominated for the 2002 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award for the Arts, in the Individual category; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might recognize and honor the musical, literary, and philanthropic contributions to Southern culture of so distinguished a South Carolinian. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate gifted storyteller, exceptional literary artist, and generous philanthropist, Dr. Lee R. Minton of Pawleys Island, for his distinguished contributions to the study and preservation of Southern history and culture through his outstanding assistance with programs focusing on the arts.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Lee Minton of Pawleys Island.
