A HOUSE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING THE REVEREND DR. ALEXANDER POPE, JR., SPIRITUAL LEADER OF AIKEN AND EDGEFIELD COUNTIES, FOR HIS COUNTLESS CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS COMMUNITY AND HIS CHURCH IN FOCUSING ON PRIDE IN THE PAST AND PROGRESS FOR THE FUTURE.

Whereas, The Reverend Dr. Alexander Pope, Jr., (Alex) was born in Aiken County, the youngest of fifteen children of Deacon Alexander Pope, Sr., and Willie Mae Williams Pope; and

Whereas, this graduate of Martha Schofield High School in Aiken went on to earn the B.A. degree in history from Vorhees College and both the Master's and Doctor of Divinity degrees after being called to the ministry; and

Whereas, his lifelong love for learning inspired him to establish a number of spiritual development courses and to revitalize the Bettis Academy Heritage Corridor, including renovating Biddle Hall on the Bettis campus into a Black Arts Museum; and

Whereas, in keeping with his passion for empowering people with the skills to meet the future, he reopened Bettis Academy in 1966 as an alternative school and last year dedicated the new L. W. Collins Education and Activity Building on the campus; and

Whereas, he has also been the leader of the First Providence Baptist Church of North Augusta for more than seventeen years, doubling its membership and increasing its outreach to more than forty-five ministries, including the Learning and Development Center for children up to age six; and

Whereas, Alex Pope has been recognized by his community with receipt of the Westinghouse Savannah River Company's 1997 Community Service Award for Outstanding Service to the CSRA and Bettis Academy communities. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina hereby recognize The Reverend Dr. Alexander Pope, Jr., spiritual leader of Aiken and Edgefield Counties, for his countless contributions to his community and his church in focusing on pride in the past and progress for the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to The Reverend Dr. Alexander Pope, Jr.
