 OF LIFE CONGREGATION FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP AND MANY
 CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS DEVOTED MEMBERS, TO THE INTERFAITH COMMUNITY, AND TO THE
 STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO WISH HIM THE VERY BEST UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE RABBI SANFORD T. MARCUS OF TREE OF LIFE CONGREGATION FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP AND MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS DEVOTED MEMBERS, TO THE INTERFAITH COMMUNITY, AND TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO WISH HIM THE VERY BEST UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Rabbi Marcus was ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1970; an avid scholar, Rabbi Marcus is the recipient of two master's degrees and was awarded an honorary doctor of divinity degree; and

Whereas, Rabbi Marcus went on to serve congregations in both Canada and Gastonia, North Carolina before coming to Tree of Life in Columbia where he has served as rabbi, spiritual leader, and guide of this congregation since August 1986; and

Whereas, Rabbi Marcus and his wife Ruth are partners in a loving marriage and find great joy in their children, Dr. Jonathon Marcus, Janet Marcus, and Julie Gomez and are the adoring grandparents of Emma, Leah, and Owen Gomez; and

Whereas, active within the community, Rabbi Marcus is an adjunct professor of Jewish History at the University of South Carolina and is a member of the South Carolina Council on the Holocaust. He is on the Board of Directors of the Palmetto Project, is a member of the steering committee of Partners in Dialogue, and has served on the Governor's Youth Council; and

Whereas, Rabbi Marcus is an outstanding leader in and deeply committed to promoting interfaith discussion, understanding, and tolerance, and he recently became the chair of Columbia's Jewish Community Relations Council. In addition, his work with the statewide Catholic community to renew Catholic-Jewish dialogue has made an undeniable impact on South Carolina; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize Rabbi Sanford Marcus and extend their appreciation to him for his dedication to serving not only his own congregation but also the interfaith community across the State where he has worked diligently to promote respect and unity among all religions. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and recognize Rabbi Sanford T. Marcus of Tree of Life Congregation for his outstanding spiritual leadership and many contributions to his devoted members, to the interfaith community, and to the State of South Carolina, and wish him the very best upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Rabbi Sanford T. Marcus.
