H. 3221

A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND CONGRATULATE AMBERLY DANIELLE NESBITT OF GREENVILLE COUNTY ON HER MOST IMPRESSIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A SPRINTER FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA WOMEN'S TRACK TEAM AND TO COMMEND HER FOR HER ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.

Whereas, Amberly Nesbitt was born August 19, 1986, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, as the beautiful daughter of James and Blondell Nesbitt; and

Whereas, she began her quest for academic and athletic excellence at J. L. Mann High School in Greenville, South Carolina, where she was recognized as Heisman Honoree and lettered in track and cheerleading; and

Whereas, while in high school, Amberly was named the South Carolina Gatorade Athlete of the Year in 2003 and 2004, was a seven-time track and field state champion finished second in the 60-meter dash at the indoor nationals, was the Taco Bell Champion in the 100-meter dash, was named MVP of the state championship team, and was selected as a member of Who's Who and the National Honor Society; and

Whereas, excelling at the collegiate level as a short sprinter takes great poise, confidence, determination, and speed as well as extreme athletic ability; and

Whereas, Amberly Nesbitt quickly demonstrated as a University of South Carolina freshman that she had more than enough talent and ability to compete in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and was soon able to make major contributions to the Gamecocks Track and Field Team; and

Whereas, in 2005 she earned All-American honors in the 60-meter dash at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, posted a season-best time of 7.31 seconds in the SEC preliminaries, and finished eighth in the conference; and

Whereas, Amberly won the gold medal at both the Weems Baskin Relays and the Orange and Purple Classic, posted a season-best mark of 11.42 seconds in the 100-meter dash at the Tennessee Quad meet, and finished twelfth at the SEC Outdoor Championships; and

Whereas, at the 2006 NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, California, she surprised everybody by turning in a remarkable time of 11.34 seconds to be crowned the NCAA champion in the 100-meter dash while helping her team finish third overall; and

Whereas, Amberly also has managed to showcase her intelligence inside the classroom by earning a 3.8 GPA in biology and being selected to the Freshman SEC Academic Honor Roll. She plans to attend medical school after she graduates from the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, she has a great love for her community and graciously helps those who are less fortunate. In June 2006, Amberly joined Team Gamecocks to visit kids at Camp Kemo in an effort to give inspiration to kids with cancer; and

Whereas, Amberly is a model student athlete whose determination, strong will, and unselfishness has led her to success on the track, in the classroom, and throughout her community; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations to honor and congratulate this daughter of South Carolina on her many accomplishments. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and congratulate Amberly Danielle Nesbitt of Greenville County on her most impressive accomplishments as a sprinter for the University of South Carolina Women's Track and Field Team and commend her for her academic excellence.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Amberly Danielle Nesbitt.
