6/21/2007

H. 4304

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE TWENTY-FIVE MILE CREEK BRIDGE SITUATED ALONG SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 34 IN KERSHAW COUNTY THE "DONALD L. TRUESDALE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT BRIDGE", AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS BRIDGE WHICH CONTAIN THE WORDS "DONALD L. TRUESDALE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT BRIDGE".

Whereas, United States Marine Corps Corporal Donald Leroy Truesdale was born on August 8, 1906, in the Town of Lugoff, and died on September 21, 1993; and

Whereas, he was married to Mrs. Gladys Truesdale, and together they raised six wonderful children; and

Whereas, on April 24, 1932, Corporal Truesdale was second in command of a Guardia Nacional Patrol in active operations against armed bandit forces in the vicinity of Constancia, near the Coco River in northern Nicaragua; and

Whereas, while the patrol was in formation on the trail searching for a bandit group with which contact had previously been made, a rifle grenade fell from its carrier and struck a rock which ignited its detonator; and

Whereas, risking his life to save the lives of his comrades, Corporal Truesdale grasped the grenade in his right hand and attempted to throw it away from the patrol; and

Whereas, while this act of valor saved the members of the patrol from loss of life and serious injury, the grenade exploded in Corporal Truesdale's hand, blowing it off and inflicting multiple wounds about his body; and

Whereas, for his bravery, Corporal Truesdale was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to forever recognize the sacrifices Corporal Truesdale made for his country by naming a bridge in Kershaw County in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the Twenty-five Mile Creek Bridge situated along South Carolina Highway 34 in Kershaw County the "Donald L. Truesdale Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Bridge", and erect appropriate markers or signs at this bridge which contain the words "Donald L. Truesdale Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Bridge".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
